Title: A Study of Romans:
1A Study of Romans
2Romans
- Chapter 1 The Gospels Power to Save
- Chapter 1-3 Mans need for Salvation
- Chapter 3-5 Justification by Faith
- Chapter 6-8 Living by Faith
- Chapter 9-11 Gods Chosen People
- Chapter 12-16 Living for Jesus
3Chapter 9 Gods Choices are Beyond Reproach
- The Jews were honored by a special role (94-5)
- But they misunderstood that role (96-24)
- God had always planned to save both Jews and
Gentiles (925-29) - The current condition of Jews and Gentiles
(930-33)
4Chapter 10 Accepting Gods Plan for Justification
- The Jews had their own plan (101-11)
5Romans 101-2 NKJV
- Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for
Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear
them witness that they have a zeal for God, but
not according to knowledge.
6Romans 103-4 NKJV
- For they being ignorant of God's righteousness,
and seeking to establish their own righteousness,
have not submitted to the righteousness of God.
7Romans 104-5 NKJV
- For Christ is the end of the law for
righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For
Moses writes about the righteousness which is of
the law, "THE MAN WHO DOES THOSE THINGS SHALL
LIVE BY THEM."
8Two Systems of Justification
- By Works of the Law
- Requires perfect works (Rom. 105 James 210-11)
- ONE PROBLEM
- We fail because we sin - Rom. 320
- Only Jesus met this standard
- By Faith
- Requires perfect faith
- Does not require perfect works
- Does not exclude works, requires works - James
214-17
9Their Own RighteousnessRelative Goodness
- Then
- Jews better than the Gentiles
- I do more good than bad
- Now
- Im better than most people
- I do more good than bad
10Their Own RighteousnessFamily Connections
- Then
- Im a child of Abraham by birth
- Therefore, my deeds dont matter
- Now
- Im a child of God by faith only
- Therefore, my deeds dont matter
11Their Own RighteousnessSelective Hearing
- Then
- I keep the Ten Commandments
- So I must be OK
- Now
- I keep the Ten Commandments
- OR I dont have any mortal sins
- OR I keep all the Scriptures I agree with
- So I must be OK
12Their Own RighteousnessSelective Hearing
- Then
- Only Moses has authority
- I dont have to listen to the prophets
- Now
- Only Jesus has authority
- So I dont have to listen to the apostles

20Romans 105-8 NKJV
- For Moses writes about the righteousness which is
of the law, "THE MAN WHO DOES THOSE THINGS SHALL
LIVE BY THEM." 6 But the righteousness of faith
speaks in this way, "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART,
'WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?' " (that is, to
bring Christ down from above) 7 or, " 'WHO WILL
DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?' " (that is, to bring
Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it
say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN
YOUR HEART" (that is, the word of faith which we
preach)
21Romans 108-10 NKJV
- the word of faith which we preach 9 that if
you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and
believe in your heart that God has raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with
the heart one believes unto righteousness, and
with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
22Chapter 10 Accepting Gods Plan for Justification
- The Jews had their own plan (101-11)
- Gods plan involves all nations (1011-17)
23Romans 1011-13 NKJV
- For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES ON HIM
WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME." 12 For there is no
distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same
Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.
13 For "WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD
SHALL BE SAVED."
24Romans 1014-16 NKJV
- How then shall they call on Him in whom they have
not believed? And how shall they believe in Him
of whom they have not heard? And how shall they
hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they
preach unless they are sent? As it is written
"HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO PREACH
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, WHO BRING GLAD TIDINGS OF
GOOD THINGS!" 16 But they have not all obeyed
the gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS
BELIEVED OUR REPORT?"
25Romans 1017 NKJV
- So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by
the word of God.
26Chapter 10 Accepting Gods Plan for Justification
- The Jews had their own plan (101-11)
- Gods plan involves all nations (1011-17)
- Gods plan was already being carried out
(1018-21)
27Romans 1018-21 NKJV
- But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed
"THEIR SOUND HAS GONE OUT TO ALL THE EARTH, AND
THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD." 19 But I
say, did Israel not know? First Moses says "I
WILL PROVOKE YOU TO JEALOUSY BY THOSE WHO ARE NOT
A NATION, I WILL MOVE YOU TO ANGER BY A FOOLISH
NATION." 20 But Isaiah is very bold and says
"I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME I WAS
MADE MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME."
21 But to Israel he says "ALL DAY LONG I HAVE
STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND
CONTRARY PEOPLE."
28The Current Standing of Jew and Gentile
- The Jews were not being rejected (111-6)
- The Jewish nation was rejecting the gospel
(117-12) - The Gentiles were receiving the blessings of the
gospel (1117-18) - But Jews could, too (1119-25)
- All would be saved the same way (1126-32)
- Praise God! (1133-36)
29Romans 1117-23 NKJV
- And if some of the branches were broken off, and
you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in
among them, and with them became a partaker of
the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do
not boast against the branches. 19 You will
say then, "Branches were broken off that I might
be grafted in." 20 Well said. Because of
unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by
faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if
God did not spare the natural branches, He may
not spare you either. 22 Therefore consider the
goodness and severity of God on those who fell,
severity but toward you, goodness, if you
continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will
be cut off. 23 And they also, if they do not
continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God
is able to graft them in again.
30Romans 1133-36 NKJV
- Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom
and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His
judgments and His ways past finding out! 34
"FOR WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD? OR WHO
HAS BECOME HIS COUNSELOR?" 35 "OR WHO HAS FIRST
GIVEN TO HIM AND IT SHALL BE REPAID TO HIM?" 36
For of Him and through Him and to Him are all
things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
