The Popes Statue
  • Michelangelo went back to Florence and started to
work on the tomb, but he was called back to Rome
with a rope around my neck to make a fourteen
foot bronze statue of the Pope.
  • The statue was completed in 1508 but was later
melted down to make a cannon.

The Sistine Chapel
  • Michelangelo was again interrupted when the Pope
wanted him to fresco the vault (one hundred
twenty feet in length, forty-five feet in width,
    and sixty-eight feet in height).
  • Michelangelo did not think of himself a painter.
He told the Pope that the place is wrong and no
painter I. The Pope threatened to banish him
from Rome if did not paint it.

The Sistine Chapel
  • Michelangelo started over the entranceway with
Flood of Noah and to finished up with scenes from
Genesis over the altar wall. (Baldini and Savini
    215)
  • Did the work with little or no help. Had to lie
on his back on top of sixty-foot-high scaffolding
with his head turned toward heaven, which, of
    course, was very uncomfortable.

5
The Sistine Chapel
  • He continued to paint for four years.
  • When he was finished, he had painted 343
    life-sized figures

6
The Tomb
  • Pope Julius died before Michelangelo could finish
    his work on the statues
  • The Popes heirs refused to pay Michelangelo
  • In the end, after 40 years, Michelangelo delivers
just a few finished statues, including the Moses.

Michelangelo continued to create many great works
of art until his death at age 89, but he will
always be remembered for the magnificent
sculptures and paintings that he created for Pope
Julius.
