Title: Celebrating Sexual Diversity at Kew High School

1
Celebrating Sexual Diversity at Kew High School
  • CD_at_Q

Faye Harding from Kew HS. has given the SEA
Network permission to display this presentation
on the Celebrating Diversity website.
2
What is CD_at_Q?
  • CD_at_Q is the catchy acronym for the Celebrating
Sexual Diversity at Kew High School group.
  • CD_at_Q was formed to enable students to help the
    school community better celebrate sexual
    diversity.

3
Who is CD_at_Q for?
  • CD_at_Q is open to any student at Kew High School.
  • CD_at_Q is not for students of any particular
    sexuality.
  • CD_at_Q is not about your sexuality, it is about
    your attitude towards sexuality.

4
What do we mean by sexuality?
  • Sexual Orientation and Sexuality The nature of a
person's basic emotional and sexual attraction to
other people. Some people's sexual orientation is
mainly towards people of the opposite sex -
heterosexual for others it is mainly towards
people of the same sex homosexual/same sex
attracted and for some it is towards either sex
    - bisexual.

5
What do we mean by celebrating sexual diversity?
  • Learning to celebrate the fact that there a range
of sexualities in our school community.
  • Recognising that not everyone identifies as
    heterosexual.
  • Knowing that research has established that
between 7 and 11 of secondary students identify
as same sex attracted (that could be as many as
    100 students at Kew HS).
  • Remembering that everyone has the right to feel
safe and accepted at school, regardless of their
    sexuality.

6
Why?
  • Josephs story

7
Discuss Josephs story
  • Discuss Josephs story, but there are certain
circumstances under which you can do this.
  • To help your discussion, consider the following
    questions/statements
  • How and why was Joseph bullied and harassed by
    other students?
  • The school helped Joseph as much as possible.
  • What do you think happened to Joseph?
  • Homophobia is the same as racism and sexism.

8
What you can do?
  • We know that teachers are busy people and that
there are many demands placed on them. However,
you can help Kew High School better celebrate
sexual diversity and reduce homophobia by
  • Assuming that at least 10 of people in the
school community identify as same sex attracted.
  • Responding to anti-gay, anti-lesbian and
homophobic abuse in the same way you would
    respond to racism or sexism.
