Title: From science centre to the classroom

1
From science centre to the classroom
2
Science centre challenges
  • Lots of action but little room for absorption
  • Impatient target group
  • No follow-up on experience
  • How do we secure a both fun and learning
    experience?

3
LearningLab possibilities
  • LearningLab personalize and prolongs your
experience in VILVITE.Visitors can collect data
from all exhibits that generate a file picture,
    film,
  • audio or data and review their experience in
    the classroom or at home.
  • Thereby data from a visit can be integrated in
    the normal learning
  • processes of the schools.
  • All saved files are sent to a personal
website enabling visitors to share their
experience with family and friends. The website
also challenges visitors to solve tasks related
to their personal experience. This is fun.
  • The personal website creates a strong
relation with science centre target groups. It is
a new communication channel between the science
centre and the visitors that generates revisits.

Public experiences
  • LOGGING ON
  • The visitor buys a ticket containing an RFID
    chip.
  • To store experiences he registers on the
  • information point with password, email
  • address and optional a picture of himself.
  • He then activates an exhibit with the RFID
  • ticket. Data from the experiment is saved
  • on his personal profile on the LearningLab
    server.
  • At the information points he can view his
  • results from the experience on his personal
  • profile page.
  • He can also visit www.vilvite.no to access
  • his online personal profile at home or in the
  • classroom, review his visit and continue
  • working with the tasks from this exhibit site.

6
Public experiences
  • INFORMATION POINTS
  • He access the information points by using his
    ticket.
  • A navigation map of all the exhibits helps him
    to find information stored
  • for each exhibit and learn more about the
    subject.
  • There is basic information on the LearningLab
about the exhibits and there are FAQs.
  • Optional information can also be found for a
    deeper understanding of
  • the technology and its applications with the
    additional use of animations
  • or movie clips.
  • To view the experience from the exhibits he has
    tried, he is
  • asked to log on to his personal profile.
  • Since 24. January 2008, the Vilvite Science
    centre has had 4703
  • unique visits to the LearningLab personal
    profile webpage.

7
Exhibit projects involving the LearningLab system.
  • Sometimes further cultivation of the content in
    an exhibit is needed to
  • achieve learning.
  • The exhibits are planned and organized so they
    generate data that is
  • used for further understanding, in a web-based
learning situation in schools or at home
  • Science Centers need new types of expertise
    compared to current
  • resources in order to attract new target groups
    and achieve a higher
  • degree of learning.
  • Establishing collaborations with the school
system is a necessity, such an approach will
    make it attractive for schools.

SUMMARY
  • This technology increases the possibility for
using the didactic approach of Science Centers
    directly in the schools.
  • Math and Science are linked up to practical
    experiences and become
  • personal relevant, easier comprehensible and
    entertaining.
  • We take part in the development of modern
    technology and its utility.
  • If nothing else, at least its fun!
