Project Goals
  • To design and develop a dry-powder, single-dose,
    disposable inhaler
  • To create a prototype that is self contained,
ruggedly constructed, weather and water proof,
    lightweight, small, ergonomically designed, and
    actively mobile
  • To be used by asthmatic individuals who desire a
    temporary alternative to traditional bulkier
devices during physical activity and/or in
    extreme environment settings

3
Personal Focus
  • Researching current mouthpiece designs
  • Determining the velocity and pressure during
    inspiration
  • Using anthropometric data for the mouth and hands
    to help with prototype development
  • Help in materials selection and prototype design
  • Working to determine the testing procedure
    specifically the ruggedness testing protocols

4
Achievements To Date
  • Set up weekly mentor meetings as well as use of
testing apparatus once prototype is complete
  • Have industry contact at 3M to discuss any
    questions or concerns
  • Decided to use albuterol sulfate as the dry
    powder medication
  • Determined rapid prototyping options at Swanson
    for prototype
  • Researched anthropometric data and current
    mouthpiece designs

5
Work To Do
  • Design a prototype in Solidworks to collaborate
    with group (late Jan.)
  • Select materials to be used for the prototype,
possibly an ideal and practical material with
    Annemarie (late Jan.)
  • Contact Andy at Swanson with our final prototype
    design Solidworks file (early Feb.)
  • Test fluid dynamics of the drug including flow
rate and particle size with group and mentor
    (Mar.)
  • Develop testing protocols with group and test
    ruggedness of prototype (late Mar.)

6
Possible Problems
  • Preventing premature activation of the inhaler
  • Keeping the drug airtight and at a constant
    temperature
  • Making the prototype portable and comfortable
  • Regulating the flow dynamics of the drug to
ensure the medication reaches the lungs
  • Determining a way to dispose of the device
