• HIV Human Immuno-deficiency Virus
• A kind of virus responsible for reduction of the
  immune system
• AIDS- Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome
• It is a condition when the immune system of the
  body is so reduced that it becomes incapable to
  fight any infection.

Genesis

• 1981 First case of unusual immune system failure
  was reported in USA
• 1983 HIV was recognized
• 1986 first HIV case was reported in India from
  Chennai
• same year first AIDS case was reported from
  Mumbai.
• 1st AIDS case in Bihar was detected in 1992
• AIDS CELL was created under Health Department
  GOB. in 1992
• Bihar State AIDS Control Society was formed and
  registered under Society Registration Act in
  1998

AIDS Situation in India

• 2.5 million Indians are living with HIV in India
  and many others who do not do not know their
  status.
• India has the second largest number of people
  living with HIV in the world
• AIDS is single largest killer
  disease in the world.

Indian Scenario

• Estimated 25 lakhs adult (15-49 years) are living
  with HIV
• Of 25 lakhs 38.4 are females 57.0 are living
  in Rural areas.
• By December 2005 1,17,716 persons Have Full
  blown AIDS
• Of total AIDS cases 85.83 were Sexually
  transmitted
• and 23.72 were in the age group of 15-29
  years.
