Hold up What are civil rights?
  • Rights (freedoms) of citizens, for example
    freedom of religion, right to a fair trial, and
    freedom from torture.

1. After the Civil War, the Congress and the
states passed three amendments to the
Constitution. Which ones were they and what did
they do/say?
  • 13th Amendment outlawed slavery
  • 14th Amendment guarantees to all persons the
    equal protection of the laws and forbids the
    national govt. and the States from unreasonable
    discrimination.
  • 15th Amendment gives the vote to males
    regardless of race

2. Describe what life was like for
African-Americans living in the post-Civil War
South. What were black codes and Jim Crow
Laws?
  • Black Codes prevented blacks from voting,
    serving on juries, holding certain jobs,
    moving/traveling freely, gathering in groups,
    etc.
  • Jim Crow Laws officially segregated schools,
    restaurants, hotels, etc.

3. What did the Supreme Court rule in its
infamous Plessy v. Ferguson case in 1896?
  • Discrimination/segregation laws do NOT violate
    the 14th Amendment as long as public
    facilities/services are separate but equal.

Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954?
  • Overturned the Plessy ruling outlawed
    discrimination in public facilities/services.
