Preparations for the conversion
  • Delete any unneeded messages and mailboxesin
    Eudora.
  • Split large mailboxes into several small
    ones(see the next slide).
  • Use simple mailbox names.
  • All mailboxes and folders are copiedduring the
    conversion.

Splitting Eudora mailboxes
  • Open the large mailbox.
  • Use Shift-click to select ranges of e-mails
    orCtrl-click to select non-adjacent e-mails.
  • Right-click over the selection and select
    Transfer.
  • Select an existing mailbox or New to create one.

Folders and mailboxes
  • In Eudora (and these notes!)
  • Mailboxes contain messages.
  • Folders contain mailboxes.
  • Thunderbird calls both folders.

Is there enough quota?
  • Check it at www.ucl.ac.uk/is/quota
  • Mailboxes live at R\Dos\EudoraRight-click on
    this folder in Windows Explorerand select
    Properties to see how much spaceis being used up
    my mailboxes.
  • In Thunderbird, click the icon to the rightof
    the column headings to display the Size columnto
    see which attachments are using up the space.

Starting Thunderbird
  • If you have never used Thunderbird before,you
    should see a screen offering various options.
  • Choose Option 1.
  • To prevent the Usenet Bug, do not login.
  • Go to Tools Account Settings Server Settings
    Advanced and remove the tick fromAllow server
    to override these namespaces.

Import your Eudora POP mailboxes
  • This stage will take a long time if you havea
    lot of mailboxes.
  • Go to Tools Import and select Mailand then
    Eudora.
  • Check that they have imported correctly.
  • If they have you may (best not immediately!)delet
    e the original POP mailboxes in Eudora.

Rogue HTML tags
  • If your messages are full of HTML tags,contact
    Desktop Support, who have a program, Eudora
    Rescue, to remove them.

Create folders on user id_at_ucl.ac.uk
  • Check mail (Ctrl-M) and login.
  • Thunderbird calls the IMAP serveruser
    id_at_ucl.ac.uk(!).
  • Right-click on user id_at_ucl.ac.ukand click New
    Folder.
  • Give the folder a name, add a /and press Enter.
    It should appear in grey italics.
  • It wants to create mailboxes, but click Cancel.

Moving current messages over
  • Drag the POP Eudora mailboxes ontouser
    id_at_ucl.ac.uk or the relevant folder under it.
  • Alternatively, create mailboxes on user
    id_at_ucl.ac.uk
  • Right-click on user id_at_ucl.ac.ukand click New
    Folder. Give it a name and press Enter.
  • Click a POP mailbox on the left.
  • Click any message and press Ctrl-A.
  • Right-click over the highlighted messages.
  • Click Move and select the mailbox.

Mailboxes over 20Mb
  • Any mailboxes still over 20Mb need to be split
    up.
  • Check www.ucl.ac.uk/is/email/imap-folder-size
  • Any red mailboxes need splitting.
  • Create new mailboxes if necessary.
  • Hold down Shift and click to highlight ranges of
    messages in mailboxes.
  • Right-click over the messages and select Move.

Converting the Eudora address book
  • Go to Tools Import.
  • Select Address Books and then Eudora.
  • Note that this imports a duplicate of any address
    in a mailing list.
  • Addresses you e-mail are added to your address
    book.
  • Right-click an e-mail address at the top of an
    open e-mail and click Add to Address Book.

Optimum settings in Thunderbird
  • Go to Tools Account Settings Server Settings.
  • Click Clean up (Expunge) Inbox on Exit.
  • If another program creates mailboxeson the IMAP
    server, right-click onuser id_at_ucl.ac.uk and
    click Subscribeto see them in Thunderbird.

Add a signature
  • Go to Start Programs Accessoriesand open
    NotePad.
  • Type your signature.
  • Save it somewhere you can find it on R.
  • Go to Tools Account Settings.
  • Click Attach this signature. Click Chooseand
    select the file you have just created.

Add a spam filter
  • Create a mailbox called _Spamon user
    id_at_ucl.ac.uk
  • Go to Tools Message Filters.
  • Click New.
  • Subject contains spam?
  • Move Message to _Spam

Limitations
  • The Eudora address book does not always convert
    well.
  • Eudora labels do not convert to Thunderbird tags.
  • The read/unread and priority status of Eudora
    messages does not transfer.
  • Attachments in the Eudora Out mailboxare lost on
    conversion.

If it all goes horribly wrong
  • You can start again with Thunderbird by
    renamingN\PCSettings\Appdata\thunderbird on
    Staff WTS(R\wts\settings\thunderbird on Cluster
    WTS).
  • This gives you the Option splash screenand
    another chance of success.
