Title: Developing and Utilizing a

1
  • Developing and Utilizing a
  • Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • for Enhanced Oil Recovery
  • Brian Reyes
  • Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute, University of
    Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming

2
What is GIS?
  • GIS is computer software that links geographic
    information with descriptive information.
  • GIS technology can integrate georeferenced
imagery as data layers and link them to other
data sets to produce geospatial representations
    of data.
  • GIS can also help users anticipate future
outcomes by depicting regression analysis for
forecasting future events and processes. i.e.
    site hazard assessments.
  • The ability of GIS to manage, correlate, predict,
model, and share geographic information makes GIS
    an essential analytical tool.

3
Why Use GIS?
  • Multiple data sources stored in a variety of
    formats in many locations.
  • EORI Database
  • WY Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
  • WY Geographic Information Science Center
  • WY Geographical Association
  • WY Geographic Information Advisory Council
  • WY State Geological Survey
  • Data needs to be integrated so that it can be
analyzed as a whole and on the basis of spatial
    relationships.
  • Spatial data can then be leveraged to make
    critical business and planning decisions.

4
GIS Tasks
  • General purpose GISs
  • essentially perform five
  • processes or tasks
  • Input
  • Manipulation
  • Management
  • Query and Analysis
  • Visualization

5
Three Views of a GIS
  • The Database View
  • Not easy to interpret.
  • The Map View
  • Worth a thousand words.
  • The Model View
  • Derives new data sets from existing datasets.
  • KEY CONCEPTS
  • Maps and database are interactive.
  • Multiple databases can be linked and related.

6

7
Needs Assessment for GIS
  • Inventory of existing resources.
  • Consulting with staff and outside resources.
  • Potential applications of GIS technology.
  • Database and system design.
  • Implementation plan.

8
Implementation Plan
  • A 1 year period divided into two 6 month phases.
  • Phase I will include the following
  • QA/QC data.
  • Build geodatabase.
  • QA/QC data in GIS.
  • Base map design.
  • Build database query tool.
  • Design a volumetrics calculation tool for a
    single reservoir.
  • As the GIS gets utilized, the need for additional
tools will arise. Any data needed for those
tools will be quality controlled and imported
    into a geodatabase.

9
Implementation Plan
  • Phase II will include the following
  • Development of the following tools
  • Scoping tool.
  • Modeling tool.
  • Hyperlink tool.
  • Photolink tool.
  • Monte Carlo simulation.
  • Electric document management system (eDMS).
  • Further work on volumetrics calculation tool for
    multiple reservoirs within a field.

10
Possible Plans for the Future??
  • Work in conjunction with other resources in order
to provide the best enhanced oil recovery
opportunities for the state of Wyoming.
  • RMOTC Jeanette Buelt
  • WYGISC Jeff Hamerlinck, Jim Oakleaf
  • WYOGCC Rick Marvel
  • Wyoming Pipeline Authority Brian Jeffries
  • Internet mapping on EORI webpage

GIS for Enhanced Oil Recovery
  • Enhanced decision making.
  • Better understanding of the spatial distribution
    of reservoir characteristics and potentially
    their origin (pure research).
  • Identify spatially related entities.
  • Proximity to required resources (low-salinity).
  • Proximity to other reservoirs with matching
    characteristics/potential EOR methods
    (sink clustering).
  • More than 70 of all oil companies use GIS.
