Divorce

• 50 of 1st marriages ended in divorce in 2002
• 60 of remarriages end in divorce
• 64 of unhappily married couples that remained
  married reported they were happy five years later
  
• Only 19 of couples that remarried reported they
  were happy five years later
• Divorce in America costs 33.3 billion annually

Divorce

• Children in single parent families are twice as
  likely to develop serious psychiatric illness and
  addictions
• Fatherless homes account for...
• 63 of youth suicides
• 90 of homeless/runaway children
• 85 of children with behavior problems
• 71 of high school dropouts
• 85 of youth in prison
• 50 of teenage mothers

• A man was not to remarry his wife after she had
  been married to another Jer 31
• If a man divorces his wife, And she goes from
  him And becomes another man's, May he return to
  her again? Would not that land be greatly
  polluted?

• Traditional interpretationdivorce was allowed if
  a certificate of divorce was given Matt 531,
  Deut 241-4
• The Law actually said
• A man was not to remarry his wife after she had
  been married to another Jer 31
• Paul taught that a woman was bound to her
  husband as long as he lived Rom 71-3

• Jesus said that sexual immorality is the only
  grounds for divorce (32)
• Any other reason causes one to commit adultery
• This is what the law meant she has been defiled
• One who marries a person who has been divorced
  also commits adultery

• Jesus goes back to creation Matt 193-6
• God created male and female
• He joined them together in the marriage
  relationship and no man has the right to break
  it!
• They missed the true meaning of the Law (7-9)
• The only reason for divorce that is acceptable
  is sexual immorality
• God allows this one exception, bit its not His
  desire Lk 627-28, 2 Cor27-9

Luke 627-28

• "But I say to you who hear Love your enemies, do
  good to those who hate you, "bless those who
  curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use
  you.
• 2 Corinthians 27-9
• so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to
  forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one
  be swallowed up with too much sorrow. Therefore I
  urge you to reaffirm your love to him. For to
  this end I also wrote, that I might put you to
  the test, whether you are obedient in all things.

• Presents serious problems for the church
• Some have soften their stance
• There are no gray areas concerning marriage,
  divorce and remarriage
• There is only one scriptural reason for divorce
• If a person is in a unscriptural relationship
  they must get out of it
• God HATES divorce! Malachi 213-16

1 Corinthians 69-11

• Do you not know that the unrighteous will not
  inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived.
  Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
  adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor
  thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor
  revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the
  kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But
  you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you
  were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and
  by the Spirit of our God.
