Title: Recycling in Germany over the last fifty years'

1
Recycling in Germany over the last fifty years.
A Powerpoint by the British Team
2
Advertisements about Recycling
  • In Germany recently there have been very few
advertisements about recycling and because of
this (our German partners believe) many people
are not separating their waste properly.
  • As people are not separating their waste it means
    that less recycling can occur.
  • Our German partners think that advertising
schemes would help a lot to influence more people
    to recycle.

3
Guidelines
  • For the consumer in Germany there are very few
guidelines for recycling. The only important
guidelines are for recycling green and organic
    waste.
  • The green waste falls under the Grünepunkt system
(green point). This is where the product comes
with a green dot on it and so it goes in a
    different bin to other waste.
  • Organic waste goes in special brown bins so it is
    separate from regular household waste.

4
When did the Recycling initiatives begin?
  • The First proper recycling initiatives began
after the reunification of East and West Germany.
The recycling began in 1990 with the introduction
    of the Grünepunkt system.
  • This means that all statistics are the same for
    the east and the west.

5
Waste Collection
  • In Germany a Household has four bins A yellow
bin for products with the Grünepunkt A brown bin
for organic waste and black and blue bins for
    household waste.
  • The yellow bins and the brown bins are emptied
every two weeks whilst the collection for the
blue and black bins varies between one week and
    two weeks.

6
Recycling Data
  • These are the 2002 figures for Germanys
recycling of Glass, Paper, Metals and plastic
  • 30 Million tons were recycled. This amounts to
    250kgs per person per year.
  • This is remarkably better than British Recycling.
In Germany 70 of all plastic produced is
recycled. This compares to Britain who only
recycles 3 of all plastics produced.

7
Government Targets
  • The main targets Germanys new government have
    set are
  • All Landfills to be closed by 2010
  • After this all of Germanys waste will be burned
    or recycled.

8
Facts and Stats
  • Germans can elect to do community service
instead of military service and many of the
people involved in the community service work in
    the recycling industry.
  • Overall Germany recycles about 50 of their waste
  • Germany recycles 80 of its Steel which makes it
the top recycler in europe of the metal.
