Title: AIX 4'1

1
AIX 4.1
  • Implementation Differences

2
AIX Packages
3
Package Differences
  • Some of the Licensed Program Products (LPPs)
that came with AIX 3.2 do not come with AIX 4.1
    (Ex. C compiler)
  • AIX 4.1 is repackaged into smaller units,
allowing only those features which are required
for a particular environment to be loaded. (Ex.
    Client, Server, etc.)

4
New Features
  • Symmetric Multiprocessor Support (SMP)
  • Better Printer/Queue Management
  • New System Management Interfaces
  • New Installation Utilities
  • New Security Options
  • Better Network Installation Management
  • New Performance Tools
  • New Licensing Scheme

5
Symmetric Multiprocessor
  • On installation, AIX 4.1 will determine if your
system is multiple processor capable and load
    accordingly
  • Multiprocessor support will load by default, if
system type can not be determined

6
Better Queue Management
  • Hold and Release jobs by job number, print queue,
    or job owner
  • Move print jobs between queues
  • Prioritize queued jobs
  • Add a printer queue from a single smit menu option

7
New System Management Interfaces (Drag Drop)
  • Device Manager (xdevicem)
  • Print Manager (xprintm)
  • Storage Manager (xlvm)
  • User Group Manager (xuserm)
  • Installation Manager (xinstallm)

8
New Installation Utilities
  • Installation Assistant (install_assist)
  • Created for novice users to install software
  • Easy Install (xinstallm -ez)
  • Install defined bundles of LPPs
  • Install Update Software Manager (xinstallm)
  • Install and Define installation bundles or
    separate LPPs
  • Maintain Installed Software Manager (xmaintm)
  • Commit or Reject a software product

9
New Security Options
  • The System administrator now has the tools to
implement certain login restrictions on a per
    user basis
  • Additional password Restrictions
  • Set times for logins and implement a locking
    scheme

10
Better Network Installation Management (NIM)
  • Replaces Diskless Workstation Management
  • Supports standalone, diskless, and dataless
    machines
  • Performs unattended installation and
    configuration
  • Utilizes standard AIX products and protocals
  • TCP/IP, NFS, BOOTP/TFTP, installp

11
New Performance Tools
  • Performance Diagnostic Tool (PDT)
  • Helps identify performance problems by collecting
a wide range of performance, configuration, and
    availability data
  • Performance Problem Management (Perfpmr)
  • Supplies problem analysis data (mostly for IBM)

12
New Licensing SchemeiFOR/LS
  • Allows software to only be licensed for the
number of users actually using it and not the
number of licensed users in the operating system
  • Same as NetLS from Hewlett Packard (HP)
  • Currently supported on a variety of
    UNIX-compatible platforms (Ex. HP/UX8, HP/UX9,
    SunOS4.1, and others)

13
Installation Options
14
Preservation Installation
  • Saves /etc/filesystems, user created logical
volumes, volume groups, along with /home, and
other user created file systems in the root
    volume group
  • Removes /, /var, /tmp, /usr
  • Default for upgrading from AIX 3.1

15
New or Overwrite Installation
  • Quicker and Cleaner
  • Allows reorganization of the file systems to
    improve performance

16
Migration Installation
  • Preserves AIX 3.2 configuration file systems ( /,
/usr, /var ) and existing page and dump devices
  • Removes all files in /tmp and migrates or moves
    selected files
  • Migrate option is Default for AIX 3.2 systems and
AIX 4.1 systems going to a new release of AIX 4
