Title: Cell Biology Unit Plan

1
Cell Biology Unit Plan
  • By David Lavernoich

2
Analyze Learners
  • The students will be in a basic level biology
    course.
  • They will be around the age of 15.
  • Some students will have learning disabilities,
while others will be exceptionally motivated.
  • They may have a broad knowledge of this subject,
but for most it will be a more in-depth look at a
    cell.

3
Objectives
  • SC.10.4.2 identify and explain the structure and
function of cell organelles (e.g., Golgi bodies,
    endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria,
    chloroplasts, ribosomes, lysosomes, vacuoles).
  • SC.10.4.3 compare the variations in cells,
tissues and organs of different organisms (e.g.,
    endocrine, nervous, digestion and immune
    systems).
  • SC.10.4.4 identify mechanisms for the movement of
materials into and out of cells (e.g., active and
    passive transport, endo- and exocytosis).
  • SC.10.2.4 properly and safely manipulate
    equipment, materials, chemicals, organisms and
    models.

Selecting Media and Materials
Sites Used
  • Cell Biology Chapter http//web.mit.edu/esgbio/ww
    w/cb/cbdir.html
  • Cells Alive http//www.cellsalive.com/
  • Virtual Cell http//www.life.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/pla
    ntbio/cell/cell.cgi
  • www.sasinschool.com

5
Materials
  • Microscope
  • Slides
  • Worksheets
  • Computers
  • Text Book

6
Utilizing Media and Material
  • Day 1
  • Students will be introduced to microscopes and
    microscope protocol.
  • Students will investigate and learn how to use a
microscope in groups looking at interesting
    slides.

7
Day 2
  • I will have a review of the day before, and
include how to make a wet mount slide.
  • Students will do the microscope activity I planed
in order to be assessed in this activity.
  • Students then will experiment with the pond water
they brought in making wet mount slides.

8
Day 3-4
  • I will cover the anatomy and function of a cell
    in class.
  • I will use an interactive website
    http//www.life.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/plantbio/cell/cel
    l.cgi as a teaching aid.

9
Day 7-8-9
  • Using www.sasinschools.com the students will be
working on an organelle job description project.
  • The students will have a list of websites that I
find appropriate, and must use at least 5
    different sites.

10
Day 10-11
  • Students will learn about how cells get rid of
    and take in material.
  • I will use assistance of text books and the web
    site http//www.life.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/plantbio/cel
    l/cell.cgi

11
Day 12
  • Students will do the membrane activity in the
    sasinschools website.
  • This will summarize what my lesson was about and
will also assess the students on how much they
    retain.

12
Day 13-14
  • Students will learn about different cell types
    and tissue types.
  • They will see illustrations and pictures of
    theses cells.
  • The students then will have to identify using a
microscope and different slides of cells, the
type and function of the cells.

13
Require Learner Participation
  • I will make my classes interactive so that
    students.
  • I will format the lectures so they are an open
forum where students feel comfortable to ask
    questions.
  • The material I cover in class will be accompanied
by many visual aids, which may help retain
    student attention.

14
Evaluate and Revise
  • SC.10.2.4. I will conduct a mini laboratory
activity using the microscopes and a work sheet I
    made.
  • SC.10.4.2 To fulfill this objective I will be
using the sasinschool website project on
    organelle function.
  • SC.10.4.4 In order to meet this standard I will
again use sasinschools but this time it is an
interactive activity that is coherent with this
    objective.
  • SC.10.4.3 This objective is assessed by a
laboratory quiz. Where students must use the
lecture information to classify and identify cell
    types.
