SFMHS Network
  • SFMHS Summit December 2005
  • All nine MH Trusts were present
  • Acknowledged current work
  • Opportunity for team planning
  • Very positive feedback
  • Call for a Network
  • www.nimhenorthwest.org.uk/Smokefree
  • Aims of first Network meeting
  • To share practice and progress across Trusts and
    develop a supportive network,
  • To explore key challenges and solutions to
    becoming smoke free, and
  • To agree actions for regional collaboration.

3
Network Action
  • Regional position statement signed by all MH
    Trusts
  • Produce staff attitude questionnaire
  • Produce guidelines on case by case exemption
  • Explore development and dissemination of
plain-english information for patients, staff and
    visitors using FAQs, evidence etc.
  • Further explore human rights aspects
  • Link with others doing similar work

4
Key lessons from practice
  • Trusts to have a steering group including all
disciplines, as detailed in HDA guidance.
  • Steering group to include patient representation
with clear mechanisms for involvement and
    consultation.
  • May be useful to separate policy into two staff
    and patients.
  • Training of all Trust staff in level 1 smoking
cessation and of specific staff in Tier 2.
  • Close links needed between MH Trust smoking
    cessation and PCT service.
  • Conducting a staff and patient questionnaire to
    baseline attitudes, knowledge and behaviour.
  • Policy to include on-site sales of tobacco.
  • Implementation of policy is based on incremental
changes to culture and practice a process of
    change.
  • Case by case exemption of patients is
    recommended.
