Westward Expansion
  • Louisiana Purchase- Jefferson was president, was
    all of the land drained by west of Mississippi
    Riverbought from France More than doubled U.S.
  • Lewis and Clark expedition explored this new land
  • Prior to Civil War westward expansion impacted
    relations between regions because southerners
    wanted to expand slavery. Free-soilers wanted
    it banned.
  • Trail of Tears- Cherokee Indians forced out of
    Georgia area. About a quarter of their people
    died. (1838)

Monroe Doctrine
  • Monroe Doctrine warning to outside powers not to
    interfere with affairs in the Western Hemisphere.
    U.S. wouldnt involve itself in European
    affairs.
  • Enforcement of this relied heavily on the British
    navy, our military wasnt strong enough to
    enforce it.
  • 2 Different Economic Systems in 1790s
  • North had factories (cities emerge)
  • South was agriculture (cotton)

  • 1824 election, Jackson won popular vote but not
    majority in electoral college.
  • Henry Clay swayed the election, and got Adams in
    a president
  • Jackson elected in 1828
  • Indian Removal Act 1830-worked treaties with
    Indians to move west.

Manifest Destiny
  • Destiny was to expand to the Pacific Ocean and
    into Mexican territory (God given, obvious thing
    to do)
  • Black Hawk War (1830)-leader of Saux tribe who
    fought against whites in Illinois. Ended in 1832.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie-gave natives control of
    Central Plains, east of Rocky Mtns.

Texas Revolution
  • Offered U.S. land grants to help with Native
    American relations-agree to obey Mexican laws and
    Roman Catholicism
  • Stephen Austin was a very successful empresario
    that gathered thousands of people there. By
    1835-45000 Americans in Texas
  • We offered to buy Texas, Mexico refused.
  • Texas Revolution-response to putting Austin in
    prison
  • Alamo-Texans drove Mexicans and Santa Anna from
    this makeshift fort. 1835
  • Texas joins Union (1844)- Sam Houston later
    attacked Santa Anna and won (Treaty of Velasco)
    Texas independence

  • Polk urges war
  • Argument was over where the Texas Mexican border
    should be
  • Northerners against, Southerners for war
  • Zachary Taylor led U.S. troops to Rio Grande
    River, thats where war started.
  • Stephen Kearny-colonel who helped settle Republic
    of California
  • Republic of California-Fremont seized this area
    in 1846
  • Winfield Scott- led forces into Mexico City and
    captured it in 1847, didnt lose a battle.
  • Enlarged our area by one-third with the victory
    over Mexico.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo- 1848 Rio Grande
    border for Texas and ceded New Mexico and
    California to U.S. We paid 15 million-also got
    Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona
  • Gadsen Purchase- 10 million to Mexico in 1853 to
    get small section below Gila River
  • California Gold Rush-1849 when people rushed to
    California, known as 49rs.
