Interaction design.Course book, part 6

2
Outline
  • Information spaces
  • We are increasingly surrounded by information
  • Information architecture (ch 23)
  • Information design (ch 24)
  • Navigation in information spaces (ch 25)
  • (Agents (ch 26))
  • Ubiquitous computing (ch 27)

3
Information spaces
  • The concept of information space
  • An information space is some combination of
things objects, displays, people, signs, icons,
sounds, and so on that is used by someone to
    provide information (p. 566)
  • Information spaces allow people to plan, manage
    and control their activities.
  • Examples
  • Conceptual information structure and (physical)
    interface onto this structure

4
Characteristics of information spaces
  • Volatility (dynamic /stable)
  • Size
  • Conceptual and physical objects
  • Topology and distance
  • Direction
  • Media
  • Design
  • (Agents)
  • Example websites

5
Topology
  • topology  (t-pl-j)n. pl. topologies 1.
Topographic study of a given place, especially
the history of a region as indicated by its
    topography.2. Medicine The anatomical structure
of a specific area or part of the body.3.
Mathematics The study of the properties of
geometric figures or solids that are not changed
by homeomorphisms, such as stretching or bending.
Donuts and picture frames are topologically
equivalent, for example.4. Computer Science The
arrangement in which the nodes of a LAN are
    connected to each other.

6
Information architecture
  • Ontologies
  • Classification schemes
  • Organizational structures
  • Metadata
  • Vocabularies

7
Ontology
  • Noun1.ontology - (computer science) a rigorous
and exhaustive organization of some knowledge
domain that is usually hierarchical and contains
all the relevant entities and their relations
2.ontology - the metaphysical study of the nature
    of being and existence
  • from TheFreeDictionary.com

8
Information design
  • Information design is concerned with icon
    design, instruction design (manuals, information
    messages), selecting fonts and graphical
layouts, and the meaning that people attach to
    such displays (p. 589)
  • Sense-making, deals with meanings rather than
    materials
  • Design discipline (relies on examples, a history
    of successful designs)
  • Theories (Gestalt psychology)

9
-- Metaphors
  • Metaphors we live by
  • Blends
  • Principles of good metaphor design
  • Integration unpacking topology analysis design

10
-- Inf. design for websites
  • Garrett
  • Strategy
  • Scope
  • Structure
  • Skeleton
  • Surface

11
-- Interactive visualizations
  • Shneiderman
  • Overview first, zoom and filter, then details on
    demand
  • Dynamic queries
  • ConeTree, tree map

12
Navigation
  • Navigation is concerned with finding out about,
and moving through, an environment (p. 609)
  • Three related activities
  • Object identification
  • Exploration
  • Wayfinding

13
-- Types of navigation
  • In georaphical spaces
  • In electronic spaces
  • In information spaces

14
-- Designing for navigation
  • Signage
  • Informational signs
  • Directional signs
  • Warning and reassurance signs
  • Maps and guides
  • Social navigation
  • Direct social navigation
  • Recommender and filtering systems
  • Social translucence
  • Visibility, Awareness, Accountability

15
Signage
  • signage  n.1. Signs considered as a group.2.
The design or use of signs and symbols.
  • The FreeDictionary.com

16
Navigation design for websites
  • Labeling (clear meanings)
  • Navigation support
  • Where you are
  • Navigation bars
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Searching

17
Ubiquitous computing and distributed information
  • UbiComp
  • Weisers vision
  • Information appliances (not in the book)
  • Home environments
  • Consumption, appropriation, and domestication
  • Three spaces (physical, technological, social)
  • Smart and supportive homes
