Fact SheetDeveloped by Safety Office, SCARNG,

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
Receptacles
  • Electrical outlets are present in essentially all
    SCARNG facilities.
  • To assure the safety of SCARNG personnel,
visitors, and guests, all electrical outlets must
be of the proper type for the application, must
be maintained in proper working order, and must
    be provided with proper protection.
  • Electrical outlets must all be equipped with a
bonded ground circuit. These receptacles can be
recognized by the roughly round small hole just
below (or above) the two main plug slots. All
electrical plugs that contain a spot for the
ground must have the ground post intact. Some
small home-type equipment (radios, for example)
may not have a ground post.
  • Electrical outlets used in or near areas in which
water may be present must be Ground Fault Circuit
Interrupter (GFCI) type. Areas where all
receptacles must be of GFCI type include
    bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor applications,
such as vehicle wash racks. These receptacles
can usually be recognized by the two small
buttons (test and reset) mounted on the
receptacle. These circuits must be tested as
    part of safety inspections.
  • For more information, consult NEC 210.8

Left A typical GFCI receptacle, required when
water may be present. Right A common deficiency
in SCARNG safety inspections is the lack of GFCI
receptacles where water may be present such as in
this location adjacent to a shower room.
