Title: Location%20Information%20in%20Radius

1
Location Information in Radius
  • Mark Jones, Hannes Tschofenig, Jorge Cuellar
  • (presentation prepared together with)
  • Farid Adrangi, Avi Lior

2
Background
  • Two different drafts have been submitted
    recently
  • draft-adrangi-radiusext-location-information-00.tx
    t
  • draft-jones-radius-geopriv-00.txt
  • Drafts address how to carry LI/LO within the
    Radius protocol
  • These two drafts have a different focus and
    motivation.
  • Some raised problems are described subsequently.

3
Carrying Location Information with
RadiusDifferent facets
  • Different scenarios
  • User in the home network
  • User in the visited network
  • Infrastructure with and without proxies
  • Different parties are involved
  • User
  • Home and visited network
  • Proxies
  • other entities
  • Different usage scenario
  • LI for authorization and billing
  • LI for further distribution
  • Alignment with Geopriv
  • Authorization policies
  • Encoding of location object

4
Conflicting requirements
  • Taxation might require that the home network
knows the users location for the purpose of
    billing.
  • User might not want the distribution its location
    information
  • from the visited network to the home network
  • from the home network to other entities
  • from the visited network to other entities
  • The home network might be trusted for some
    purposes but not for everything.
  • Hard problem Visited network interacts with end
host to make sure that distribution of the
    location information is authorized

5
What is the way forward?Merging
  • Draft merging needs to address three issues
  • Scenario/Scope
  • Encoding of Location Object
  • XML-based
  • Non-XML based
  • Privacy/Security Aspects
  • Need to be addressed in sufficient detail
  • Scenarios need to be respected
  • Splitting into two phases
  • One draft addresses immediately relevant problems
  • Additional draft covers more advanced issues

6
Location information can be used by different
entitiesProposal
  • Inside the scope of an Adrangi draft
  • Home network for usage in the context of
    authorization and billing
  • Future version
  • Visited network uses location information for
    distribution to other entities
  • Home network distributes location information to
    other entities
  • Radius proxies can see location information and
can possibly correlate it with the user's identity

7
Next Steps
  • What does the working group think?
  • How should we move forward?
