- "I strongly encourage you to participate in
an Alternative Break with Orphanage Outreach. We
were provided the support, structure, education
and inspiration that made this a genuinely
growing experience for our entire group -
students and leaders alike. We returned to our
campus with an enhanced awareness of issues of
privilege, inclusion, service, and personal
responsibility, as well as a broader world
context for economic and political concerns. Do
not miss this opportunity for multi-leveled
growth for you and your students." - Roger Callahan, Ed.D.,
- Assistant Vice Provost, NCSU
6University of Alabama-Birmingham
- I am the faculty advisor for SOSH (Students
in Optometric Service to Humanity) out of the
University of Alabama Birmingham School of
Optometry. For each of the past 8 years a group
consisting of myself and about 20 students has
traveled outside the US during our spring break
to provide eye care and eye wear to people in
need. Our trip to Monte Cristi in March
exceeded all of our expectations. With regard to
accommodations and logistics, this has become the
trip against which all others are and will be
measured. It is truly a turn-key mission
operation. Fantastic job! We will be here
again. - John Essinger, O.D.,

23Volunteer Comments
24This is the one thing in my college career that
really stands out. I've been forever changed and
I know I have made an impact on
others. ...Jessica Magners, York College of
Pennsylvania
25Everyone should experience this trip. I was
touched by the generosity and happiness of the
children. It was something our culture could
learn from, I know I did. . Liz Schuster,
Bucknell University
26The children in the Dominican Republic will amaze
you with their enthusiasm, spirit, and
willingness to try anything I have never
experienced anything so beautiful. Nancylynn
Price, Temple University
27This has been one of the most meaningful weeks of
my life. I am having a hard time putting into
words the things that I felt this week and how
much I have grown. Ashleigh Eustice Penn State
University
28This was the most touching and life changing
thing I have ever participated in. If you are
thinking of going, don't think twice about it, it
will be the best decision you will ever make,
take my word for it. ..Rebecca Honig, Dickinson
College
29This was one of the best experiences of my life.
I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I
went there hoping to help out an orphanage and
touch the lives of children, but they ended up
touching my life much more deeply. I learned so
much and will definitely return next year. It
was a life altering experience! ...Suzanne
DeLong, Univ of Pennsylvania
30The Orphanage-Outreach program is absolutely
amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone and
everyone. The orphans, staff, and school
children helped me grow as an individual.
Working with Orphanage-Outreach was an experience
of a lifetime, I would do it again in a
second. Heather Oster, DePauw University
31The trip to the Orphanage was awesome, not only
could we help in a country of poverty, but we
also got so much out of it individually. I know
no one came back quite the same. Sharon Alderman,
Huntington College
32Absolutely go on the trip. It is such an amazing
experience. You have to be willing to step
outside of your comfort zone, but the personal
growth is completely worth it. Also, the kids
are great. They're bright, funny, and talented
young people. They make it really tough to
leave. .Stepheny Berry, Kansas University
Medical Center
33I have done many outreach and community service
projects, but what made this one different is
that the directors and volunteers of Orphanage
Outreach were each incredible people. I was blown
away by the interests and backgrounds of the
different people that this program attracted, and
like the point was made- you leave something
there or take something with you, Orphanage
Outreach becomes a part of you when you leave.
You are Orphanage Outreach and you will make a
huge difference. ...Vanessa Galan, Wheaton
College
34From teaching classes to the kids, to learning
about the Dominican Republic myself from the
kids, I have never felt more culturally immersed
in a foreign country's way of living. From the
way I ate, to the simple living conditions, and
finally to the farm we helped on...I came home
wishing I was still there. Brigitte Hamadey,
Boston College
35The trip was the most amazing and intense week of
my life. The boys at the orphanage are all so
special and appreciate what we did so much, it
was overwhelming. Jean Sullivan, University of
Massachusetts
36The trip was incredible and intense. You are
filled with love and a feeling that is
inexpressible with words. I learned more than I
ever could in a classroom and I recommend this
trip to everyone. Nicolle Szewczyk, Mount
Holyoke College
37This trip was hard work but lots of fun,
frustrating at times but also incredibly
rewarding. I learned more in two weeks here than
I have in any semester long class. Lara Dreir,
University of Minnesota
38It is so rewarding, no where else can you have
such a rich experience in so short a time... It
would be impossible to participate and not get
the feeling that this one short week will retain
its significance in your memory and your life for
a long time. Liza Davies, Princeton University
39The week I spent in Esperanza was the most
educating, the most challenging, and the most
AMAZING week I have ever had. Mary Beaumont,
Penn State University
40This was one of the best experiences of my life.
I learned so much from the kids and the other
volunteers about loving life and making the most
of what youve got. Kate Newby, Brown
University
