3Introduction
- This presentation is specifically designed to
show a remote Support DBA the steps to start the
creation of course accounts for dynamic online
courses only. Setup information for classes held
onsite at the Regis Campuses are out of the scope
of this presentation. Please feel free to add new
appendices and revise the information in this
document for future practicum students. - The tasks that are performed by the remote
Support DBA are one of three tasks that must be
done for complete class setup. - All work performed by the remote Support DBA will
only be done on the Dev Servers. - The Lead DBA performs the final tasks on the
Class Servers. - The Lead DBA needs at least one weekend prior to
class start to complete the entire setup of all
dynamic course accounts. - The dynamic online courses are MSCD 640 Database
Administration MSCD 642 Backup and Recovery and
MSCD 644 Performance Tuning
4Acronyms Used
- ARN Academic Research Network
- BK Backup and Recovery

5Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part One
- The dynamic online course accounts are what
remote students use to connect to the ARN to
complete their course work for which they are
enrolled. - Course accounts have been predetermined
- Course accounts are comprised of an ID and number
range - Slides 6-9 identify and describe course account
information
6Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part Two
The dynamic online courses have been organized
with permanent and unique Citrix and Oracle
instance IDs. The IDs are unique identifiers
that can be associated with a specific dynamic
online course. The diagram below identifies the
course with the permanently assigned Citrix and
instance ID (shown in italics).
7Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part
Three
The dynamic online courses have been organized
with permanent number ranges. The diagram below
identifies the course with the assigned Citrix
and instance number ranges (shown in italics).
8Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part
Four
The course Citrix and instance IDs accompanied
by a number is what comprises a course
account. The diagram below identifies the course
with the assigned Citrix and instance login IDs
with number ranges (shown in italics).
9Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part
Five
In addition, the 8W1 and 8W2 courses are
pre-assigned a subset of the numbers within the
range. 8W1 courses are assigned the subset
001-099 and 8W2 courses use the subset 101-199.
10Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part Six
- In summary,
- Course accounts have been predetermined
- Course accounts are comprised of an ID and
number range - The Lead DBA will assign the course accounts
according to the organization scheme explained on
slides 6-9. - Finally, it is important to note which Class
servers the students in online courses are set up
on.
11Dynamic Online Course Account Information Part
Seven
For informational purposes, each dynamic course
is assigned to a Class database server. The 642
and 644 course are setup on the Class4 server and
the 640 course is on the Class3 server. Please
note that the remote Support DBA will be starting
the creation of dynamic online course accounts
only on the Dev servers. The Lead DBA will
complete setup of the course accounts on the
Class servers.
12Get Connected to the ARN Part One
- Connect to the Internet
- Navigate to http//citrix.arn.regis.edu
- Log in using the Username and Password that was
assigned to you by the Practicum Lead DBA - The Citrix ICA Client is required to access this
site. - See Appendix A for installation instructions.
- Note Course students follow the same process to
access their course database on the ARN. You can
troubleshoot basic Citrix issues by making sure
they follow these instructions.
13Get Connected to the ARN Part Two
To access the Regis ARN, you will be connecting
through the Citrix interface. In order to view
this site, you should have already downloaded and
installed the Citrix Client, if not see Appendix
A.
Type your Username and Password into the fields
and click Log in.
You will be assigned a permanent Citrix username
and password. Your credentials give you access to
all portal applications.
14Get Connected to the ARN Part Three
After you have successfully logged in, this page
will appear. From here you have access to all
application portals.
For the purposes of this presentation you will
only be accessing the ARN using the ILB-Desktop
Application Portal.
Double-click the ILB-Desktop icon.
15Get Connected to the ARN Part Four
After selecting the Oracle Desktop Application
Portal Icon Citrix will prompt you to select the
ICA Client File Security.
The purpose of the ICA Client File Security is to
control the level of access the Oracle Desktop
Application has to your local drives. Before you
can begin working with the desktop you will need
to select access options for the ICA Client File
Security. It is recommended that you select Full
Access and Always ask me once per connection.
This recommendation is also applicable to course
students. If you experience problems because
another option was selected see Appendix B for
instructions to reset the prompt.
16Oracle Desktop Part One
After successfully logging into the ILB-Desktop
Application Portal, a window will open and it
will load a Windows Desktop. This is the Virtual
Desktop on which you will complete the next
steps. This Virtual Desktop is located within
the Regis ARN. The image represents the Virtual
Desktop as it could appear to you. Note that
icons on the desktop can change or be moved as
growth and change continue at Regis. A new item
installed on the servers is Microsofts
Anti-Spyware software. You may need to interact
with it, just follow its on screen instructions.
17Oracle Desktop Part Two
From here you will perform the steps to set up
the dynamic online course accounts for which you
were assigned. Note when doing trial tests use
only a couple of the assigned accounts. The
reason for this is because of the extensive
length of time and resources that Oracle uses to
create all accounts. To begin you will be using
the My Computer Icon on the Virtual Desktop to
map a drive and open Windows Explorer to navigate.
18Drive Mapping Part One
The dynamic class setup scripts are located in
the Data directory on the Dev3 server. You must
map a drive to that directory in order to access
and run the scripts.
- To map the drive
- Right-click the My Computer icon on the
Virtual Desktop - Select Map Network Drive
- Select a Drive from the drop down list, for
this presentation I used P - Type \\dev3\data in the Folder field
- Click Finish
- Remember You will always use the development
servers for starting the account creation
process. The Practicum Lead DBA will finish
creating the course accounts on the Class Servers.
You can also use the Browse button to map the
drive. This method is out of the scope of this
presentation.
19Drive Mapping Part Two
- Use Windows Explorer to
- Verify that the drive was successfully mapped
- Navigate to the Data directory on Dev3
- To Open Windows Explorer
- Right-click on the My Computer icon on the
Virtual Desktop. - Click Explore.
- Scroll down and click on data on Dev3(P)
20Account Creation Part One
Step 1 Create the Course Folder
- In Windows Explorer, drill down to the templates
directory \\dev3\data\nocfiles\setup\templates - With the templates directory selected, click File
gt New gt Folder - Name the folder with the appropriate course
number and section - Remember the dynamic online courses numbers are
- 640 (for Database Administration)
- 642 (for Backup and Recovery)
- 644 (for Performance Tuning)
- The course section will look like
- XPS40, XPS41, XPS70, XPS71, M40, M70, etc.
- See the next slide for an example of a correct
folder name.
21Account Creation Part Two
Continued Step 1 Create the Course Folder
Note that the folder name should not include the
MSCD portion of the course number and section.
22Account Creation Part Three
Step 2 Create the Course Instances
Introduction The runjava.bat batch file is a
DOS script program that automates the creation of
multiple database accounts. You were assigned
the course Citrix and instance Login ID and
range. In this script you will be providing the
range of numbers from the assigned
accounts. Remember the below matrix. The
following screens show examples for setting up
MSCD642XPS70 course accounts.
23Account Creation Part Four
Continued Step 2 Create the Course Instances
- You will need the following information for data
entry into the interactive prompts in the script - Instance begin number (i.e. 101)
- Instance end number (i.e. 199)
- Course number (i.e. 642)
- Course section (i.e. xps70)
- Mapped drive letter (This is the letter of the
drive you mapped to \\Dev3\Data, i.e. P) - In the templates directory where you created the
course folder \\dev3\data\nocfiles\setup\templat
es - Find and double-click the runjava.bat file.
Note this script runs in DOS. - Remember when doing trial tests use only a couple
of the assigned accounts. The reason for this is
because of the extensive length of time and
resources that Oracle uses to create all accounts.
24Account Creation Part Five
Continued Step 2 Create the Course Instances
After launching the runjava.bat script file,
the following DOS prompt will open. At start the
text seen below appears within the DOS window.
After it reaches this point there will be five
sequential interactive prompts. At each prompt
type the information requested and click OK. When
all five prompts have received information, the
script will continue with account creation.
Note If you are proceeding with the full course
account creation process, this will take a long
time to complete. Please be patient. You can see
the DOS output changes. Contact the Lead DBA if
you have problems here.
25Account Creation Part Six

interactive prompts in which you will enter the
course and account information.
Type the Course and Section Number in the field
and click OK.
29Account Creation Part Ten
Continued Step 2 Create the Course Instances
This presentation uses the following course and
accounts as the example MSCD642XPS70
remote04101-118 This is the last interactive
prompt in which you will enter the course and
account information. After completing this entry
the DOS prompt will persist and continue to
output the results of the script.
Type the Drive Letter that you mapped to
\\dev3\data in the field and click OK.
30Account Creation Part Eleven
Continued Step 2 Create the Course Instances
- Summary
- If you are proceeding with the full course
account creation process, this will take a long
time to complete. Please be patient. - This process could take up to an hour or more.
- Try to coordinate with other teams so not all
teams are attempting account creation at the same
time because doing so will only cause longer
delays. - You can see the DOS output changes.
- Contact the Lead DBA if you have problems here.
31E-mail the Files Part One
Step 3 Email the Listener and Tnsnames files to
the Lead DBA
After the runjava.bat script has completed,
navigate to the course folder (example
\\dev3\data\nocfiles\setup\templates\642xps70) to
verify the Listener and Tnsnames files were
created. The files are text documents and will be
named cnumbersection_listener and
cnumbersection_tnsnames.
The next two slides show content excerpts from
the Listener and Tnsnames files.
32E-mail the Files Part Two
Continued Step 3 Email the Listener and Tnsnames
files to the Lead DBA
This is an excerpt of the output content of the
Listener text document.
