Leg Ulcers

• 1-2 of the general population will have a leg
  ulcer at some point.
• 25-65 of District Nurses time is spent caring
  for patients with leg ulcers.
• 400 million is spent annually on leg ulcer care.

Leg ulcers can mean

• Social isolation due to the social stigma, odour
  and reduced mobility.
• Pain.
• Can affect a persons ability to work.
• Dependence on nurses
• A long episode of treatment and re-occurrence.

Differ from conventional clinics

• They are community based-held in a non medical
  setting eg village hall.
• Members are treated collectively.
• They operate on a drop in basis.
• They incorporate a fully integrated well leg
  regime.
• Leg Clubs are owned by the members (patients) and
  volunteers who form a committee to run the club.

• Im involved in the running of the club

  bit of cream and plaster

• I can attend in my own time
• The DNs have put a lot of work into the club-and
  seem to have got it right
