Developmental PsychologyAssessment
  • The Effects of Media Violence on Childrens
    Development
  • Debate Research Report

2
Essay and DebateLearning Objectives
  • (The slide title is at the bottom!)
  • Use appropriate sources of evidence.
  • Present the evidence in a variety of formats,
    including extended writing.
  • Begin to use academic conventions in writing
    essays.

3
What you need to Cover(appropriate sources)
  • Debate
  • You can refer to media reports, but these should
only be examples to support psychological
    evidence.
  • You should know both sides of the debate, but you
can come down on one side only.

4
What you need to Cover(continued)
  • Essay
  • Your essay should only refer to academic research
investigating the effects of TV violence on child
    development.
  • Cover all sides of the debate.
  • You can also link to other related studies.

5
Why youre doing the debate first
  • You can use the information from your essay.
  • It gives you a chance to extend your thinking.
  • You have the opportunity to share resources and
    develop a more rounded discussion.

6
Conventions on writing essays(this info is in
your handbook)
  • Word-processing is a requirement - use 12pt plain
fonts and double space the lines
  • Do not use I, my, me, you, we, I think, I believe
    etc.
  • Provide a balanced argument, with evidence from
    all sides (evaluate).
  • You do not have to agree with one side or the
    other to conclude.

7
Times 12pt double spaced example
  • When you are typing an essay you need to be
using Times, Arial or Helvetica. Any of these
kinds of plain fonts are good this is Times 12
point double spaced. There are also rules about
referencing which you need to follow and these
can be found in your Handbook. The purpose of
these conventions on style and referencing are to
make it easier for a person to read your essays,
research reports etc. The reader (or teacher) can
write between the lines to mark specific parts,
and referencing enables the reader to locate the
research referred to themselves. Your references
this year only need to include the name of the
author / date of publication, like this (Freud,
    1906).

8
Things to remember
  • Instead of I think, try it can be argued or
    it must be concluded etc.
  • Always use evidence to back up the points you
    make.

9
Conclusion
  • Two Part Assessment
  • Debate
  • Research Report (essay)
  • You will be assessed on both parts equally and
should begin your research straight away.
  • DONT FORGET to record the sources of your
    information.
