Common Sentence Errors
  • Watch out for fragments. All sentences require a

  • A verb must match its subject (34).
  • Pronouns usually replace or refer to other nouns
so they must match those nouns in number and
    gender (36b).
  • Beware of comma splices (33c, 38).
  • Avoid run-on sentences (33b).

4
Word Choice

  • Avoid using the passive voice (26a).

5
Organization
  • Write a clear thesis (3c).
  • Begin an essay with an interesting fact, idea, or
image in order to grab the readers attention
    (4f).
  • Use specific details to develop your thesis (20).
  • Conclude with strength (4f, 5b).

6
Proofreading and Editing
  • Take a break before you edit and proofread.
  • Ask a friend to read your paper and give
    feedback.
  • Read your paper aloud (5a).
  • Create a checklist from your professors feedback
in order recognize specific bad habits.
  • Do not rely on spell-check (5e, 45).

7
Miscellaneous Tips
  • Plan ahead.
  • Do not wait until the last minute.
  • Visit your professor during office hours if you
