3
What is Technology Roadmapping?
  • A needs-driven technology planning process
  • It brings together a group of experts to develop
a framework to allow appropriate technology
    investment decisions
  • It identifies future products and technology
needs as well as alternative products and
    technologies
  • It enhances competitive advantage

4
What is a Technology Roadmap
  • A document generated by the technology
    roadmapping process
  • It identifies alternative technology paths or
roads to meet defined performance objectives

5
Uses and Benefits of Technology Roadmapping
  • Used by industry, organisations and government
    (policy makers)
  • It provides information to help make better
    technology investment decisions
  • common vision about a set of needs and technology
    requirements to meet those needs
  • human resources, infrastructure and funding
requirements for RD to deliver the products and
    technologies required
  • strategic planning and co-ordinated RD

6
Methodology
  • The Technology Roadmap is not an extrapolation
of the existing products and/or processes, but it
is the process that is driven by national needs
    over a 5- 10 year period

7
The Process
  • 1. Initialisation of the project
  • Final agreements between parties, t.o.r., project
plan and contracts in place, etc.
  • 2. Prelimenary activity
  • Identify focus areas Woking Groups
  • Identify key stakeholders (chairpersons and
    working group members)

8
The Process cont.
  • 3. Development of the Technology Roadmap
  • Working groups in action
  • 4. Finalisation of project
  • Stakeholder inputs to critique, review
  • Roll out

9
The Stakeholders
  • Government
  • Industry Business sectors
  • Research Scientific community
  • Key / expert stakeholders identified to
    participate in working groups

  • All other stakeholders
  • invited to provide input during - phase 3
  • critique, review and validate draft roadmap -
    phase 4

10
Roadmapping Tools
  • Technoscan tool on disc - developed for DST by
    AMI
  • Biotechnology Strategy
  • Background documents on roadmapping methodology,
    biotechnology research, markets trends, etc.
  • Key experts expertise experiences

11
Biotechnology Roadmapping Project Focus Areas
12

    used)
  • 2. Description of area
  • 3. Current status of area (technology trends,
    markets etc)
  • 4. Identified new and existing technology
clusters and platforms to be developed
  • 5. Describe opportunities and potential
    breakthrough technological innovations

  • 10. Shortcomings, barriers and gaps in resources
  • 11. Other critical factors (show-stoppers) that
if not met, will cause the roadmap to fail
  • 12. Performance targets (outcomes)
  • 13. Outputs and activities to achieve the
    outcomes (tasks and actions required)
  • 14. Logical, prioritised sequence of technology
    acquisition/diffusion (requires an assessment of
the ability of stakeholders to adapt to
    technologies)
  • 15. Areas not addressed
  • 16. Potential role of public and private partners
  • 17. Recommendations (evaluation, implementation
    technical)

  • Report to be distributed to all stakeholders
followed by a round of feedback,
  • The feedback is incorporated into the Roadmap
  • Final draft report submitted to DST (Convergence
    Report).
