Title: Amazon Basin Biodiversity Information Facility ABBIF

1
Amazon Basin Biodiversity Information Facility
ABBIF
2
Proposal
  • digital data infrastructure is a fundamental
    requirement.
  • An action plan must be carried out to digitize
and integrate all relevant information on the
region in a structured manner, with the adoption
of standards and protocols that allow transparent
    data integration and systems interoperability.

3
Proposal
  • A feasibility study was proposed
  • development of a data infrastructure for the
    Amazon region
  • broad and inclusive participation of local
    stakeholders.
  • Objective
  • increase the value, visibility and usage of data
on the Amazon basin through dynamic networking
and thereby contribute to better conservation
practices and sustainable use of the regions
    natural resources.

Activities
  • Preparation of the questionnaire
  • Selection of institutions and Identification of
    key players (on-line survey)
  • Distribution email and on-line
  • Contacts personal meetings
  • Studies
  • Analysis

6
Selection of institutions and individuals
  • Strategy
  • Internet survey databases and information
systems available on the internet, focusing on
    biological collections and data custodians
  • GBIF and CRIA contacts
  • Questionnaire on-line
  • Results
  • Over 600 e-mails sent to 254 institutions from 15
    countries
  • More then 200 collections answered from 22
    countries ( French Guiana)

Architecture
  • the establishment of an integrated regional
information system for the Amazonian region,
based on free and open access to taxonomic
    information and specimen data
  • the development of a system where each
data/information provider or custodian will be
    fully responsible for his/her own
    data/information
  • the development of a system where each provider
    can undertake frequent updating
  • the development of a system that will help
    promote data validation
  • the development of a system where full
    attribution to data/information sources are
    given
  • strengthening of local stakeholders biological
    collections and data custodians
  • strengthening and integration of existing
information systems at local, national, and
    regional levels and,
  • integration of ABBIF with GBIF.

Digitization
  • There is a clear need for resources for
    digitization
  • Strategy
  • Coordinated effort with local information systems
    (Siamazonia, Humboldt, Cria)
  • Standards and protocols in place
  • Digitization, data cleaning, dissemination
  • Proposals
  • Digitization plan
  • Clear policy for data sharing with free and open
    access to non sensitive data
  • Budget proposed
  • US 200K to Peru, Colombia, Brasil, Venezuela
  • another US200K for projects from other countries
  • total US 1.000K

14
Repatriation
  • There is a clear need for resources for
    digitization
  • Try to make specimen from the Amazon region a
priority for digitization funding in Europe and
    in the US
  • Very interesting opportunities were identified
  • Explore bilaterial and multilateral cooperation
    agreements
  • Thematic Information Systems

15
Important gaps
  • Important institutions did not answer the
questionnaire such as the Smithsonian and the
    Natural History Museum in London
  • 2 new questionnaires were received in the last 7
    days
  • This does not invalidate the work but does show
that there must be more opportunities for
    collaboration
