SST of the Baltic Sea - AIRS
Brightness temperature plot
Clear window of AIRS at 2616 wavenumber There
are no clouds above sea surface beetwen Borholm
and Latvia so it is a good area for SST
estimation
SST ? 274 - 275K
This is rather a realiable value of temperature
for this region and season (especially this cold
spring)

SST of the Baltic Sea - MODIS
The formula to correct surface temperature to
account the water vapour
Ts - surface temperature Tb11 , Tb12 -
brightness temp. measured at 11 and 12 micron,
respectively k11 , k12 - absorption
coefficient at 11 and 12 micron, respectively
SST ? 272 - 274K

MODIS linear combination vs. AIRS clear channel
?T TMODIS - TAIRS ? 1 K
Estimation of SST by MODIS is quite good
(comparing to AIRS). MODIS has better spatial
resolution so can be more usefull for detailed
investigation

Phytoplankton search

There is no significant difference between
reflection from the Vistula estuary and the rest
of the Gulf of Gdansk
There is an interesting area in the Gulf of
Gdansk (more reflectance than from clean water)

There is about 2 K difference in SST between
estuary of Vistula River and the rest of the
Gulf of Gdansk

Phytoplankton formula
The highest values of phytoplankton formula are
in the estuary of Vistula River. It could be
phytoplankton there, but it could be some kind of
sediment in this water

In scatterplot clean water surface points are
clearly separated from the Vistula estuary
waters

Conclusions
  • We can use MODIS estimation of sea surface
    temperature as good as from AIRS clear channel
    (2616 wavenumber).
  • High spacial resolution of MODIS data enables us
    to investigate differences in SST in such area
    as river estuary, gulf, coast.
  • Searching a phytoplankton is difficult because of
    the influence of the atmosphere.
  • Phytoplankton search formula is good, but
    sediment and pollution can give the same result.
