MONTANA
Shared Youth Vision Montana's vision for
disadvantaged youth is an outcome-focused
approach designed to prepare youth to become
economically self-sufficient and actively engaged
in their community. Mission for the Shared
Youth Vision To properly address the needs of
disadvantaged youth to ensure they grow up to be
productive adults, the Shared Youth Vision Team
proposes the creation of a "Disadvantaged Youth
Initiative" to be coordinated through the
executive office of the Governor to - Promote
educational attainment, leading to individual
self-sufficiency and skills attainment which will
generate the productive workforce necessary for
Montana's economic future.
6
THE CORE TEAM JOURNEY
  • Developed an asset map
  • Designed a framework for building effective
    partnerships
  • Framework-increase the number of out-of- school
    youth-at-risk (16-24 years) who earn a GED by 5
    in 2010
  • Recruit partners whose targeted population will
    benefit

7

LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION
14
MONTANA PAYS A PRICE
15
GED OPENS THE DOORS
16
INITIATIVE NEED
  • GED demographic statistical report
  • 2003 - 2102 GEDs attained
  • 2004 - 2087 GEDs attained
  • 2005 1962 GEDs attained
  • 2006 2670 GEDs attained
  • 2007 2604 GEDs attained
  • Montana's labor force would be strengthened by
increasing the number of high school credentials
(High School Diploma or GED) attained.

17
INITIATIVE NEED
  • Governors Labor Day Report 2007
  • Another potential pool of workers exists in
individuals who have not completed their high
school education. A significant gap exists
between these individuals and all other education
    classifications. By helping these workers
complete their education and increase their
skills a new source of labor could be made
    available to businesses.

18
THE YOUTH VOICE
  • High School Equivalency Survey (May 2008)
  • Traditional school was unsupportive
  • Disinterested in them
  • Not challenged
  • Majority wanted GED to pursue postsecondary,
    apprenticeship, employment, or military
