AQATIC THERAPEUTIC METHODS

• Halliwick and Water Specific Therapy (WST)
• Bad Ragaz Ring Method (BRRM)
• Relaxation in water (Watsu, Ai-chi, Jahara)
• Aerob conditioning (aquafitness, aquastep)

The patient

• C. Erzsébet 50 years old female
• Infected with polio in 1958
• Her four limb became plegic/paralized
• For 44 years practically sitting in a wheelchair,
  presently in an electronic one
• Living in a country side, with her parents,
  sister and nefews

• Altough she is strongly restricted in her self
  care, her left hand (fingers, wrist) is working,
  so in sitting position she is able to eat the
  prepared food, drink, wash her teeth, comb, do
  make-up
• Sitting 10-14 hours a day, able to move one place
  to the other only with wheelchair

Due to her situation, the wheelchair

• She felt like a passive puppets
• altough warm-supported enviroment (her family)
  helping her and she was try to be an active part
  as much as she can she felt like an end
  fellow, in stand by position
• Isolated, enervatic

• More often had neck sprain, back and hip pain
• - hip-spine OA , discopathia C-L, scoliosis
• - myalgia
• Joint-muscle contractures
• GI-problems, high blood pressure
• According the pressure, her skin became rough

Treatment methods

• Twice a year 2 -3 weeks complex reumatological
  treatment in spa enviroment
• Since 1997 during her hospital stay 3 times a
  week aquatic therapy, 3-5 x subaqual massage, 3x
  exercise on dryland, electrotherapy
• This year after her 3 weeks treatment in April,
  once in every 2 weeks 1 hour aquatic therapy
• In subaquatic enviroment floating, relaxation,
  joint movement facilitation and stabilisation,
  increasing muscle power(isometric), functional
  movement, swimming (Halliwick, BRRM)

The effect of the regular aquatic therapy

• She reborn in body and mind as well
• free (!!!), painfree MOVEMENTS become possible,
  under her controll as well
• Improved posture, stability of sitting (rough
  skin marks)
• Mucle tone, power improved, that makes her care
  much easier
• Reduced pain
• Self-esteem, unbelievable energies for 5 years
  she is one of the mouth and foot painter artist,
• CREATE, WORKING
