field support services in Tajikistan
- The program has been in operation since 1999.
- The objective is to provide practical,
cost-effective and self-sustaining veterinary
service to private live-stock owners. - The Veterinary Field Unit, VFU, system trains and
equips government veterinarians and contract them
to provide animal health services in their areas
of residence.
3Development of self-sustaining animal health and
field support services in Tajikistan
- VFUs were begun in Kurgan Tube and Kulyab and
expanded from there throughout the country. - In the end of year 2000 114 contractors had been
set up, trained, equipped and made operational - Up until today the number is 439 VFUs, supported
from nine veterinary field bases

- moving from a face of emergency into a face
containing more elements of development - focus being on continuing education through
individual monitoring and workshops - emphasizing on the importance for the
veterinarians to have their clinics functioning
as private businesses. -
8Current situation on zoonotic diseases in
Tajikistan
- Due to the general collapse of the veterinary
services after the fall of the Soviet Union and
in the after maths of the civil war the
incidences of several diseases, among them
several very severe and also zoonotic, has risen
dramatically over the past years

19Actions being taken
- After two workshops on Zoonotic diseases held in
Dushanbe in 2003 it was decided to concentrate
first on trying to reduce the incidence of
Brucellosis. - Brucellosis was at that time the only zoonotic
dseases that was at all possible to talk openly
about - Reducing the incidence of Brucellosis in animals
and humans is also the governments priority and
Brucellosis is governments priority zoonotic
disease.

- Budget for 2001 63 000 USD
- Has decided to concentrate on five diseases,
considered to be of most importance - Anthrax
- Brucellosis
- Foot and Mouth disease, FMD
- Rhinderpest
- Tuberculosis
22Costs for reducing prevalence of zoonotic diseases
- SVD have estimated the cost for vaccines and
diagnostics for all livestock in the entire
country against these five diseases to 1 387 711
USD. - If one takes in all real costs, a budget for
vaccinating all sheep, goats and cattle in this
country only against Brucellosis would be
approximately 1 960 243 USD.
23Improved public health through Brucellosis
control in high risk regions in Tajikistan
- Funding from the Government of Norway and Canada
- Will be monitored by the veterinary and public
health services of the government. - In one month 300 000 sheep and goats in 600
villages in 8 rayons in Rasht valley are to be
vaccinated. - Has just started off, this Tuesday a workshop
for veterinarians and medical health workers were
conducted here in Dushanbe and the day after
vaccinations began in Faizabad.
