11Measuring School Readiness
School readiness to learn is defined as a childs
ability to meet the task demands of school, such
as being cooperative, sitting quietly, listening
to the teacher, and being able to benefit from
the educational activities that are provided by
the school. The Early Development Instrument
(EDI) provides information on populations of
children with respect to 5 domains of early
development including Physical Health and Well
Being Social Competence Emotional
Maturity Language and Cognitive
Development Communication Skills and General
Knowledge
12Are the children ready for school?
UEY North children scored significantly lower
than other children across Ontario on Physical
Health and Well-Being, Social Competence,
Emotional Maturity, and Communication and General
Knowledge. However, they scored significantly
higher than other children across Ontario on
Language and Cognitive Development. Offord
