What does pruning do?

• Creates a wound
• Opens tissue to decay organisms
• CODIT
• Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees
• Opens tissue to insects and other pests
• Initiates induced wound response
• Reduces auxin production
• Increased carbon allocation to wounded tissues
• Suberinization of wound
• Reduces carbon intake for entire plant

• When trees are young
• Smaller limbs
