Structure of Postgraduate Research Degrees

• 4 key stages of postgraduate research degrees
• 1. Enrolment
• 2. Registration
• 3. Progression (including MPhil/PhD upgrade)
• 4. Examination
• All four steps are undergoing review and revision
  
• 7 Research Student Progress Groups (RSPGs) based
  in Faculties with Research Institute
  representation and cross-Faculty membership
• MRes and DProf degrees undergoing review

Enrolment

• Key changes to enrolment involve
• Central administration of enquiries
• - early assessment of applicant eligibility
• - active engagement with potential supervisors
• - fixed response time for applicants
• Register of accredited supervisors
• - current and aspirant supervisors
• - research expertise and previous students
• Revised enrolment forms
• - greater clarity and online submission
• - signed off by Faculty/Institute leads
• - signed off by Graduate School

Registration

• Key changes to registration involve
• Biannual registration at RSPGs
• - February/March and October/November
• - recommend 6 months prior preparation
• - 3 decisions approve, refer and decline
• Revised registration forms
• - greater clarity and online submission
• - more space for detailed project proposal
• - more detail on skills training assessment
• - assessment of supervisory expertise
• - ethics review required prior to registration
• - facilitate practice-based research degrees
• - prepare for assessment of written material

Progression

• Key changes to progression involve
• Regular assessment at RSPGs
• - every 6mo (FT) or 12mo (PT)
• - independent assessment of written material
• - MPhil/PhD upgrade viva
• - 3 decisions approve, refer and decline
• Intermission and Extension
• - intermission in advance no fees/no
  supervision
• - extension in advance fees/supervision
• Revised annual monitoring forms and data
• - greater clarity and online submission
• - changes to proposal and related ethics
• - monitoring of skills training attendance

Examination

• Key changes to examination involve
• Appointment of Independent Chairs
• - monitor conduct of examination
• - ensure regulations are followed
• - approve/clarify examiners recommendations
• No prior assessment of thesis
• - students decide on submission of thesis
• - all submitted theses are subjected to viva
