Early Life

• Born on July 6, 1747 in Kirkcudbrightshire,
  Scotland
• Was the fourth child of John Paul and Jean
  Macduff
• Went to sea when he was 12

Adulthood

• He had become a captain by the age of 21
• His first ship was the Alfred
• In 1773 he killed a mutinous crewman and rather
  than stay in prison and wait for trial, he fled
  to North America
• He attempted to conceal his identity by adding
  surname of Jones

Importance During The Revolution

• In 1777, he was given command of the Ranger,fresh
  from Portsmouth shipyard.
• He sailed to France, then daringly took the war
  to the shores of the British Isles on raids
• In 1778, he captured the Drake, a British warship

Later Years

• After the Revolution he was sent to Europe to
  collect the prize money due the United States
• In 1788 he was asked by Catherine the Great to
  join the Russian navy as a rear admiral
• In 1789 he was discharged from the Russian navy
  and returned to Paris
• He died on July 18,1792

Now

• There is a museum called John Paul Jones Museum
  in New Hampshire
• There is a memorial park in Maine named after him
• There is a statue of him in Philadelphia
