  • Baker-Miller Gilligan toward a psychology of
women and men that is inclusive of both genders
    lived experience
  • Inquiry Group presentations

2
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • Baker-Miller finds that womens strengths have
been made into what is not valued and, therefore,
    are called weaknesses.

3
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • Gilligan finds that womens moral reasoning is
contextual and dependent upon reducing hurt to
others and, therefore, scores lower on the
Kohlberg scale which uses rules and principles.

4
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • In Baker-Millers new psychology it is only by
including womens strengths into our theorizing
about human development that a whole human (and
    humane) psychology can be constructed.

5
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • Gilligan likewise finds that only by including
womens moral reasoning, what she calls, an
ethic of care, into our theorizing about moral
development can a whole psychology of moral
    development be constructed.

6
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • Both theorists/psychologists find that
psychological development has been theorized from
an androcentric or patriarchal perspective which
has at its core a male bias (white and
privileged) through which women are found to be
    not-like-men and therefore inferior.

7
Overview of Gilligans work in relation to
Baker-Miller
  • What would it mean to actually do what
    Baker-Miller and Gilligan suggest?
  • How would we go about doing it?
  • Methodologies?
  • Conceptual frameworks?
  • Who would be included?
  • What are some of the limitations of
    Baker-Millers and Gilligans research?
  • How would you correct for these limitations?
