Background

• The Big Sur Coast Highway runs from San Carpoforo
  Creek at the northern end of San Luis Obispo
  County north to the Carmel River
• Built in the 1930s, it is both a State Scenic
  Highway and a National Scenic Byway
• The landscape can be characterized as
  extraordinarily beautiful but rugged and unstable
• As a result the highway is subject to frequent
  closures due to landslides, rockfalls, and debris
  slides

Purpose

• To develop comprehensive and sustainable
  management strategies that respect and promote
  common values
• Safe and efficient operation of the highway
• Preservation of intrinsic qualities
• The goal is to operate proactively rather than
  reactively
• Identify what our activities will be ahead of
  time based on whats there
• Get pre-approval for these activities

Geographic Information System

• An integral component of the plan is GIS
• In addition to a set of documents (the Plan)
• GIS was used to collect, map, and display
  facilities, geology, and intrinsic qualities

Architecture

• Arcview and Access
• Spatial data are viewable through Arcview
• Most tabular data are stored in Access
• Access forms provide user-friendly format for
  viewing data
• Link from Arcview
• Users without Arcview can view data using Access
• Application and data are distributed on two CDs
  (north south)
