    ceremonies
  • Two UNT students were named 2008 Barry M.
Goldwater Scholars, while a third received

    any other Texas university.

total of 69,000 in Rotary Ambassadorial
Scholarships for study abroad during the 2008-09
    academic year.
  • Vinay Ramasesh, a TAMS student, is one of 40
students in the nation selected as a finalist in
the 2008 Intel Science Talent Search. He is the
ninth TAMS student to be named a finalist since
1993, and the third since 2006.

23
Student Success

world championship at the IEExtreme and the
Codeboys placed 26th in the global Challenge 24
    competition.
  • Moot Court squad ended its competition year with
two of its two-student teams ranked first and
second in the state by the Texas Undergraduate
    Moot Court Association.
  • Kuntal Cholera was ranked in the top 20 out of
148 students and higher than any other Texas
college student at this year's National Debate
    Tournament.

    Fall 2007
  • Emerald Eagle Scholars on average took more
credits and finished more credits in the fall
than the freshman class as a whole
  • 12 Emerald Eagle Scholars made 4.0 GPA in the
Fall and almost 60 made 3.5 or higher
  • Data for spring not yet available. However, this
spring we intervened with the students who did
not appear on track to finish the year with 30
hours and a 2.5 GPA or higher.

25
Emerald Eagle Scholars
  • Although Emerald Eagle Scholars are not
guaranteed paid tuition and fees in the summer,
we are offering scholarships for enrolling this
summer to both current scholars and the new class
of scholars who are graduating high school this
    spring.
  • The endowment supporting the scholars is now more
than 500,000 after the 2008 Emerald Ball. The
next Emerald Ball is set for Feb. 28, 2009.

26
  • The UNT and Denton community together will read
Barbara Kingsolver's The Bean Trees and explore
American Identity in an Age of Immigration during
our inaugural year of One Book, One Community.

of our fall 2008 semester, though UNT's incoming
freshmen will begin reading after they receive
    the book during orientation.
  • An entire year of activities will engage our
community in a discussion and exploration of the
