Title: Series: Jesus claim to deity

1
I Am The Bread of Life
  • Series Jesus claim to deity

2
Introduction
  • We have seen both Old Testament and New Testament
    prophets claiming Jesus deity.
  • Daniel implied the deity of the Messiah. Dan.
    713
  • The apostle Johns entire gospel is centered upon
the claim of Jesus deity. Jn. 11

3
Introduction
  • It is Jesus, ultimately, who made his own claims
to deity as the Son of God.
  • Either he flat out lied (or deliriously insane)
and wanted us to believe in Him as such.
  • Or, he spoke the truth and wants us to believe in
    Him as such.

4
Introduction
  • The first illustration of His claim came when
Jesus said I am the Bread of Life.
  • From this we learn that eternal life comes by
taking in the One who gives it.
  • Ultimately, we also learn that this is Jesus
    claim to being God.

5
Jesus Alludes To His Claim of Being the Son of God
  • NOTE
  • No one questioned Jesus humanity, but so many
    questioned His claim to deity.
  • Jesus came to this world as the express image
of God so that the world through Him would
    turn
  • Before making a more explicit claim, He makes
implications that are understood even by His
    detractors.

6
Jesus Alludes To His Claim of Being the Son of God
  • My Father is working until now, and I Myself am
    working. Jn. 517
  • Jesus already claimed to Nicodemus that He was
Gods only Begotten Son. Jn. 316, 18
  • In this instance Jesus claimed to be continuously
working with (not independent of) His
Father.even on the Sabatth! Jn. 516, 18 (also,
    Jn. 519-23)

7
Jesus Alludes To His Claim of Being the Son of God
  • Testimonies that declared the truth of Jesus
message that He is deity (the Son of God).
  • Self testimony (which would be rejected by the
    Jews. Dt. 1915). Jn. 531-32 (Jn. 729)
  • The works of Jesus testify of Him that He is from
    God. Jn. 533
  • John (Baptizer) truthfully witnessed about Jesus.
    Jn. 533 (see Jn. 19, 19)
  • The witness from heaven (of the heavenly Father).
    Matt. 316-17

8
Jesus Alludes To His Claim of Being the Son of God
  • The feeding of the five thousand.
  • Jesus knew what He was intending to do. Jn. 66
  • He (miraculously) provides food for the multitude
    following Him.

9
Jesus makes the claim I Am The Bread of Life
  • Jesus wanted people to believe in His name the
    Son of God.
  • This is what He told Nicodemus. Jn. 318
  • This is what He taught many in Jerusalem. Jn.
    525
  • This was His claim that ultimately cost Him His
life (through the will of God). Jn. 640 (Jn.
    197)
  • To illustrate that He was the Son of God, He
said I am the Bread of Life. Jn. 635

10
Jesus makes the claim I Am The Bread of Life
  • As the Bread of Life Jesus compared and
contrasted Himself with the manna. Exo. 16
  • Compared bread from God, provides life. Jn.
    631-32
  • Contrasted never hunger (or thirst) again He
came down from heaven hence, Jesus is the bread
    of life. Jn. 633, 35, 38

11
Jesus makes the claim I Am The Bread of Life
  • The end result depends on whether you believe.
  • Those who do not accept Him as the Son of God
will remain dead in their sins.
  • The fact is, many of Jesus own disciples did not
believe and followed Him no more. Jn. 660, 66
  • Those who accept Jesus as the Son of God who
came down from heaven AND who gives life will
    have eternal life. Jn. 667-69

12
Conclusion
  • Many have difficulty in Jesus being God (or the
Son of God) who came from heaven and lived as a
    man.
  • Those who believe and live in Him, however, will
    have eternal life.
