How to turn from a concrete jungle into a green,
ecological environment

The Janson River Flood Control Project, Taiwan
  • Project Summary
  • The objective of this project is to build a 15 Km
long levee along the Janson River. The promotion
of Eco-Engineering concept has been carried out
    directly from government officials.
  • Its principal structures consist of the erosion
control gabions, earth reinforced zone and
    waterproofing GCLs.(geosynthetics clay liner)
  • The GCLs is crucial, it must effectively block
the water into the earth reinforced zone
(isolating seepage flow as much as possible).

New Thoughts for Eco-Engineering in Flood Control
Project
  • In the past, the traditional engineering did
not take the ecological concept into
    consideration. Frequently, the concrete
structures are the only solution to most of the
riverbank projects. The result always leads to a
    worse environmental destruction rather than
    effectively solving the underlying problem.

Conclusion
  • Eco-Engineering uses system approaches, natural
material and try to cause lest disturbance to
natural environment, so it is an effective way to
    reduce natural disasters.
  • The GCLs can be beneficial to many
Eco-Engineering projects such as channel lining,
earth dams and wetlands etc. Just use your
    imagination!
