Title: Engineering New Organisms

1
Engineering New Organisms
2
Genetic Engineering
  • Cutting and splicing of DNA from different
    sources
  • Genes can be inserted into almost any organism
  • Transgenic organisms
  • An organism that has been transformed with genes
    from another organism
  •  Usually done to increase the production of
    valuable proteins

3
More on Human Genetics
  • Diseases and CSI (not the learning center one)

4
Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP)
  • Isolation of a specific nucleotide sequence
  • Digestion of DNA with restriction enzymes
  • Separate the pieces on an agarose gel
  • Probe the separated sequences with labeled probe
    (complimentary to the separated pieces)
    nucleotides

5
RFLP
  • RFLPs are inherited
  • Different people have different sets of RFLPs
  • Thus an individuals DNA can be identified
  •  RFLPs can be used as for diagnosis of genetic
    disease
  • RFLPs can be used for DNA fingerprinting

6
Human Genome
  • Sequence the entire set of human chromosomes
  • Handout supplement from DOE website on human
    genome
  • Highlights of the human genome project
