History

• Roots in the Atoms For Peace Program
• Meant to supply Iran with electricity
• 1970 ratified NPT
• After 1979 revolution, Iran wanted to continue
  program under domestic support with help from
  IAEA

Post 1979

• Work was halted during Iran-Iraq war
• Reactors destroyed by Iraqi air strikes through
  1984-1987
• 1995, Russia sent technicians to Iran to rebuild
  the Bushehr reactor, remove plutonium and train
  scientists, later cancelled
• 2002 dissidents report existence of uranium
  refining and heavy water facilities

Recent flare ups

• In January 2006, uranium enrichment restarted
• In 2007 multiple centrifuges were installed at
  the Natanz site
• 2007 NIE says program shut down in 2003

Concerns about Iran

• Even though program is reportedly dead there are
  some concerns
• Sell nuclear materials to terrorist organizations
  like Hamas
• Give the know how to countries like Syria to
  develop own bombs.
• destabilise area
• use bombs against U.S. Allies and other targets

• Iran has not conducted or acknowledged any
  nuclear tests of any kind

Reaction from international community

• The nation of Iran has suffered many sanctions
  from the UN as result of it's nuclear program
• Many companies in the west have stopped doing
  business with Iran.

Conclusion

• Iran has enriched uranium and the needed
  equipment to do it.
• What Iran is planning to use the uranium for is
  unknown
• Many in the west think it will be part of a
  weapons program, Iran claims it's for peaceful
  purposes
• Iran is being punished for it by the UN
• The history of the Iranian nuclear program is
  very sketchy at best.
