Grade 8 Social Studies
People Through The Ages
2
Section 1 The Stone Age
Survival Skills
3
Fire Making
Stone Age people used fire to keep warm, cook
food, and for protection from predators. Before
they learned to make fire they had to get it from
lighting strikes or volcanoes. They may have
stolen it from other groups.
4
The Hunting Dance
The hunting dance was important when hunters went
to hunt animals to get food and clothing.
5
Tool Making
This type of tool making technique is called
flaking. It was invented by the Cro-Magnons. Some
other names for this technique are stone blade
method, rocker-punch flaking, punch flaking,
flintknapping method, and pressure flaking. Tools
made with this method are blade flakes, spears,
harpoons, and needles. Besides Cro-Magnons, other
Stone Age people used this method, such as the
Neandertals, Modern humans, Homo erectus, and
Homo habilis. This method was superior because
tools made from blade flakes were much more
efficient than core and flake tools made by
earlier peoples when compared in terms of
maximizing the use of precious brittle-flaking
rock materials. Materials used for the chisel
were animal bones, tusks, rocks, and antlers.
Materials used for the hammer were antlers,
animal bones, and stone hammers. There were
certain rocks that were used to make into flakes
like the prepared rock core and the Burlington
core.
