Technology Milestones

Technology Milestones The 60s and 70s
  • LCIs first computer was installed in 1967 and
    was a Honeywell H-200 with 4KB of Memory and 0KB
    of Disk Space.
  • Paper MMRs were shipped to HQ for entry.
  • Data Entry was performed on key punched cards.

Technology Milestones The 80s and 90s
  • By the 90s we were up to 256KB of Memory and 8GB
    of Disk Space on a Honeywell Bull DPS 7000.
  • Paper MMRs could be Faxed to HQ.
  • Staff had to schedule time at a terminal to do
    their work (including programmers).

Technology Milestones Y2K through Today
  • Bull Mainframe replaced with state of the art
    Hewlett Packard blade servers.
  • 64GB of Memory and 20TB of Disk Space.
  • 85 of Clubs enter their own MMRs over the web.
  • Each employee has their own computer.

  • Create a Collaboration service to organize lions
    such as to go to meeting (keep it secure and
    private)
  • New member report should have same fields as

  • Standardize forms/publications to Letter and
    identify Legal size forms in advance
  • Allow MMR Report Downloads

  • Use the same font for everything (Arial or
    Tahoma)
  • Allow data entry errors to be corrected (e.g.,
    dropped deceased wrong member)
  • Validate phone number entry

    clubs that are without web access)

    awards and display all dates (keep original
    reporting month)

    members by club.

  • Correcting mistakes is difficult/impossible when
    copying from column based publications (e.g., by
    laws)

  • District Governor training should include LCI HQ
    overview
  • The old Membership application form is on the
    website instead of the new one

  • Club health report updated daily (great report
    but update it more often)
  • Writable PDFs for youth exchange and other
    publications
  • Standardizing publications and making Doc
    versions available
  • Avoid columns to help copying and pasting
  • Change contact us to make it easier to figure out
    who to get a hold of
  • Copying PDF to Word for club publications is
    difficult

  • Create a way to communicate within the district
    such as a district forum where clubs can send and
    receive messages to/from other clubs and to/from
    the district. Also send a notification via
    e-mail when messages are posted.
