Title: What is Bowen Therapy

1
What is Bowen Therapy?
presents
  • A high level overview with demonstrations.

2
So what is it?
  • Bowen is unique in the field of bodywork. The
relatively few, gentle "moves" over muscle and
soft tissue, address the whole body, stimulating
it to reset and heal itself.
  • It is generally agreed that Bowen works primarily
through the nervous system on both structural and
energetic levels. Healing most likely occurs
through the response of the body's autonomic
nervous system to the Bowen moves.
  • Bowen is a complementary modality in the sense
that it enhances and complements, but does not
    interfere with, traditional medical attention.

3
Where did Bowen come from?
  • Thomas Ambrose Bowen was born in 1916 in
Australia. From the 1950's until his death on in
1982, he developed his unique soft-tissue
therapeutic technique that is now known as The
    Bowen Technique.
  • Tom Bowen was not formally trained in any medical
    or alternative therapy discipline. Nevertheless,
he considered himself to be an osteopath since
his assessment and treatment of each patient
    reflected the complete physiological situation
    presenting in the moment.
  • It was through his general love of sports and his
regular attendance at football games that Tom
Bowen became interested in massage and other
soft-tissue manipulation. He watched the teams'
trainers treat injured players and began to learn
from them. He observed that particular 'moves' on
the body's soft tissue resulted in particular
    effects.

Therapy based on the assumption that restoring
health is best accomplished by manipulating the
skeleton and muscles

5
What to expect
  • The hands-on work usually lasts between 15 and 45
    minutes.
  • The pressure used by the practitioner is almost
always less than you would expect. On occasion,
you might feel a momentary twinge. Be sure to
tell your practitioner if you are uncomfortable
    at any time.
  • Application of the technique involves stimulation
of precise points on the body, in groups of 2 - 8
    points at a time.
  • Your practitioner will leave the room between
groups of moves, to allow your body time to
    process the work.
  • Points generally progress from the torso/core of
the body outward. In most first sessions, the
points used are on the back, buttocks,
    hamstrings, shoulder, neck, and knees.
  • Additional points may be added in areas where you
have symptoms and/or elsewhere throughout the
    body.
  • The most common reaction to Bowen is a deep sense
of overall relaxation and lessening of muscular
    tension and pain.
  • The restorative process begins once the body is
relaxed. It is not uncommon for people to fall
    asleep during a session.

6
Bowen for injuries or post-op support.
  • The ideal time for a Bowen session is immediately
    after an injury.
  • Your body can overcome the trauma before it
begins to compensate for it, creating more
    problems in the long run.
  • If you can't get to a Bowen practitioner
immediately, the sooner you can, the better.
Within three days is ideal for the quickest and
    most complete recovery.
  • Many people don't find out about Bowen until
weeks, months, or even years of trying other
approaches or "learning to live with it.

7
After the session.
  • Each person's response to Bowen continues for
several hours or days, as his or her individual
body allows. The benefits will be enhanced by
    following simple guidelines
  • Don't overdo anything for the rest of that day,
with regard to exercise or exertion.
  • When getting out of a bed or chair or car, have
your weight transfer equally onto both feet.
  • Increase the intake of water, to encourage the
body's ability to eliminate toxins released by
the muscles and connective tissue during and
    after the session.
  • Try not to remain seated for longer than half an
hour at a time. Get up and walk around.
  • Don't overwork the jaw after jaw imbalance is
    addressed.
  • Get plenty of sleep.

8
During the Session
  • Your first session will be designed so that I can
learn about your body's healing needs by
    performing a series of evaluations.
  • The goal is to identify problem areas, which will
be addressed during future sessions, while
promoting relaxation and harmony within the body.
The first session will set the body up to promote
a healing environment for future sessions.
  • Your health and well-being is my primary concern.
If at anytime you feel faint, nauseous, sick or
uneasy please let me know immediately. If such an
event occurs we will promptly end our session. If
this happens, thats ok! Sometimes the body is in
such distress that it can not handle a full Bowen
    session on the first visit.
