Title: Web Authoring and Publishing

1
  • Web Authoring and Publishing

2
  • Some key features of Publisher for web authoring
  • A wide selection of design templates with
built-in internal hyperlinks quick, easy to use
  • Alternatively, from a blank template, design
    objects can be inserted
  • Other Office applications (Word, PowerPoint,
Excel) can be easily integrated into the
Publisher web pages through object linking
  • Pages can be regularly previewed in a browser
during authoring to check web layout and
    functionality
  • Web pages can be turned into DTP documents with a
common style (and vice versa, especially in
    Publisher 2002)

3
  • Some important considerations
  • Try to appreciate that there are more limitations
to the layout of text and graphics in a web page
than there are in a DTP document
  • This also limits DTP-web transformation
  • Work within tables and frames and do not overlap
    text and images
  • Consider your target audience and avoid excessive
image or multimedia content where home or low
    bandwidth access is essential
  • Use the Design Checker and Web Page Preview to
optimise layout and file size and ensure
functioning of links and media content
  • Inform your ISP or web site host if your site
includes a form this needs a processing script
    on the server

4
  • Adding moving images and functionality to your
    web pages
  • Do a web search for Animated GIFs (or click
    this link for GifsNow)
  • These are the simplest form of animation and can
be downloaded and inserted to make your web site
lively (although take care to retain some dignity
if this is part of your school site!).
  • When you become more accomplished you can also
search for Javascripts and Java Applets for
    functioning website components and special
effects , although more skill is needed to insert
    these into your site

5
  • Activities in TTTF Module 6
  • Exploring school web sites - see Module 3
  • Planning web sites - especially essential for
pupil work and a useful collaborative group
    exercise
  • Creating web sites - follow these steps very
carefully remembering to Save and use Web Page
    Preview regularly.
  • Consider the pros and cons of Publisher for
    creating web pages
