Arts Center
Theatre tech students at VSFAC get real-life
experience working behind the scenes with
national touring shows and concerts. Students
receive the unique experience of working along
side seasoned back-stage professionals with
national theatrical tours, concerts, corporate
events and more. Students perform a variety of
functions from working the light and sound boards
to assisting back stage with wardrobe and makeup,
props, flyrails, and working the spotlights.
Students in good standing may have an
opportunity to earn a paycheck working the
professional shows and rentals at the Van
Singel.

Our students have played a major role in
launching national touring musicals from the Van
Singel Fine Arts Center. For several years,
techies at the Van Singel have had the
opportunity to work backstage mounting
shows.preparing and building the sets, lights
and sound for shows to travel to other cities
throughout the U.S.

Theatre tech graduates from the Van Singel Fine
Arts Center are sought after and are employed
working with the backstage crews for national
touring productions, for IATSE (Stage Technicians
Union), and at other local venues. Several
students use their knowledge and education to
further their studies in backstage technology at
major universities and colleges with a Bachelors
or Masters degree.

Candlewood International, national and
international producer of touring shows, has come
to the Van Singel for several years specifically
to use the our students to help launch national
theatrical tours. Executive producer, John Hodge
at Candlewood stated, I have been producing
shows for over 20 years and have been all over
the country at various facilities mounting
theatrical tours. And what these kids do here is
phenomenal (referring to the theatre tech
students at Van Singel), and the theatre tech
program you have here should be set as a national
standard for other similar programs, not just in
West Michigan, but in the country.
