    on January 26, 1897
  • Original name of the Fraternity was Tau Phi Delta
  • Was founded on February 26, 1897 at Vincennes
    University in Vincennes, IN

The Beginning The Motto
  • The first two initiates were the brothers Samuel
    and Maurice Bayard
  • Their mother, Mrs. Joseph L. Bayard, inspired our
    Motto
  • It was from the book, A Death in the Desert by
    Robert Browning

Progress, a mans distinctive mark alone. Not
Gods, and not the beasts God is, they are Man
partly is and wholly hopes to be.

  • The Spanish-American War in 1898 almost ended the
    Fraternity but Rolin Rosco James is credited with
    saving it
  • Three other events that threatened Sigma Pi

From Tau Phi Delta to Sigma Pi
  • Robert George Patterson student at Ohio State
    who convinced Tau Phi Delta to change their name
    to Sigma Pi
  • He lied about being a member of Sigma Pi to many
    people to facilitate the name change
  • Tau Phi Delta became Sigma Pi on February 11,
    1907 in the Niblack-Weems home in Vincennes, IN

Early Expansion
  • First chapter is called the Alpha Chapter
  • The first national Congress was held in
    Vincennes, IN from May 6-8, 1908
  • The Sphinx Club at the University of Illinois was
    founded by Byron R. Lewis and became the Phi
    Chapter, the second chapter
  • The third chapter, the Gamma Chapter, was
    established at Ohio State University

Development of Initiatory Rites
  • The Cryptic Arts was the initiatory rite used
    to install the Phi and Gamma Chapters
  • The English Chivalric Ritual was the
    Fraternitys second initiatory rite
  • Today, The Golden Quest is used to initiate a
    Chapter into the Fraternity
