FOCUS ON BEESTON NORTH
ITS STEVE FOR COUNTY COUNCIL!

Beeston Liberal Democrats have chosen Steve Carr
as their candidate for Beeston North in this
years County Council election. Most of you will
know Steve as your local, hardworking and popular
Borough Councillor, who was first elected in this
area with Adele Brunton in May 2003. Steve
commented on his selection, I am delighted to
have this opportunity to become the
representative of local residents on
Nottinghamshire County Council. I have become
increasingly frustrated that as a Borough
Councillor it is very difficult to influence
decisions taken by County. Being your County
councillor will enable me to try and help
residents even more. Beeston North councillor
Adele Brunton said, Steve is the ideal choice
for residents. He is very conscientious and will
help anyone who comes to him for assistance. Many
residents support him even if they hold different
political views. That is an indication of his
hard work and dedication. It would be a real
waste not to elect him. Beeston North in the
County Council covers the borough ward of the
same name and Beeston West. In the 2003 elections
across both wards, the LibDems had 40 of the
vote to Labours 34 and the Conservatives 26.
GET YOUR PRIORITIES RIGHT! For many years now, a
group of people have been meeting to try and make
a difference to peoples lives in Beeston North.
This meeting has always been known as the Beeston
North Focus Group. It is disappointing that Mick
Warner, the Labour Leader of the County Council,
has seen fit to object to the name FOCUS in this
groups name. He is concerned that local
residents will associate this word with their
local LibDem councillors! Adele Brunton
commented, Steve Carr and myself will carry on
supporting this group whatever it is called.
Indeed, we have been successful in getting funds
for a toy library whilst Labour County
councillors can only worry about what the group
is called.
POPULAR WALKS BOOKLET This very popular booklet
has been re-released after numerous requests. It
offers Broxtowe residents six of the best walks

SOCIAL SERVICES SHORTFALL Labour-controlled
Nottinghamshire County Council have caused
outrage because they are withdrawing funds paid
to people who are caring for family and friends.
The respite scheme ensured that full-time carers
received support for short periods so that they
could have some time to recharge their
batteries. Your councillors have been inundated
with complaints from local residents who are
going to see a real difference to their lives.
Steve Carr said, This complete mismanagement by
Labour in the County Council is going to effect
those in society who are the most vulnerable and
least able to fight for their rights. I am amazed
the Labour party have done this Carers deserve
much better and we in the Liberal Democrats are
determined that they get a better deal.
ATTENBOROUGH NATURE CENTRE Construction of The
Attenborough Nature Centre near the Barton Lane
Car Park is well underway. This is a 1.8 million
project to provide a modern energy efficient
structure which will offer information,
educational facilities, a café and toilets.
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust have been
successful in securing the bulk of the funding
and the Council has provided 70,000 which has
helped to release over 700,000 from other
sources. The centre is scheduled to be opened by
Sir David Attenborough on 5th March 2005.
PROTECT OUR OPEN SPACES! Local councillor, Steve
Carr has asked Broxtowe Council to speed up moves
towards designating the Ridge a nature reserve.
This will give far more protection against
development of this valuable open space.
MIDDLETON CRESCENT Steve and Adele have been
campaigning against a plan to demolish the
thatched bungalow on Derby Road to make way for 4
courtyard style houses. The plan was originally
refused by Broxtowe council but was appealed. We
are pleased to report that the Government
Inspectorate have upheld the refusal and the
development will not go ahead.
A message from David Watts, Prospective
Parliamentary Candidate for Broxtowe. It started
in Bramcote and Kimberley, it spread to
Stapleford, Trowell and Beeston, and now the
Lib-Dem surge in Broxtowe is poised to spread
even further. Following the last borough
elections we now have more councillors in the
constituency than at any time previously, and we
are looking to see that growth continue in the
county and general elections next year. The
Lib-Dems have been one half of the ruling
partnership on Broxtowe Borough Council for the
past eighteen months, and during that time we
have repaid the faith people placed in us by
ensuring that costs and council tax are tightly
controlled, whilst protecting front line council
services. This years elections will offer us the
opportunity to change the face of politics in
Nottinghamshire and I urge you all to join with
us in this campaign. Best wishes,
David
