2The Short (10 minute) Talk
- Should be easy because its short.right?
But the time flies by quickly

3FIRST
- Recognize that there are 2 parts to any talk
- CONTENT and
- DELIVERY
- If either part is not done well, the outcome will
be disappointing.
4CONTENT - things you can do to plan a good short
talk (part 1)
- Use 1 slide (or less) for every minute.
- plan slide layouts to focus your audience on key
points you want to make.
- Use the first 1-2 min for a brief introduction
give a little background, what your goals
are in the project / talk, why it is important.

- Keep word slides simple, use key words or phrases
- the least amount of text.
- Dont use jargon or phrases specific to your
field use abbreviations only after defining
them.
- Dont overdo PowerPoint special effects!

- Tell a small and well-defined portion of your
story - dont try to talk about everything.
- Plan content based on how you would explain what
you are doing to someone not in your field - a
non-expert

PRACTICE
- .standing, using a laser pointer, and a timer -
multiple times.. - .until your transitions between slides are
smooth, - .you know what slide is next,
- .you know what to say for each slide,
- .you finish on time.
10DELIVERY - things you can do to give a good short

- Speak loudly and into the microphone.
- Speak from your slides and memory - not a
written text (practice works!) - Speak to individuals in your audience look at
several different people during the talk.

- Hold the pointer steady
- use both hands,
- or hold your hand against something
- use small motions so a viewer can find where
it is - Dont wave the pointer all over
- youll distract the viewers,
- zap someone in the eye,
- or give them headaches.
12DELIVERY - things you can do to give a good short
talk (part 5)
- Dont keep your back to the audience!
- Most importantly, speak with interest, emotion,
and enthusiasm. - Oh..and practice a few more times!
