3
Advertisements
  • Pay attention to key words and place this
language in your cover letter and/or resume.
  • Respond to advertisements that may be below your
    skill level.
  • Use industry-specific job boards or sites that
capture everything posted like indeed.com or
    jobster.com
  • Visit Career Services at OU and prior
    institutions for postings.

4
Networking
  • Good recruiting professionals are always
    networkingwe are everywhere!
  • Engage in campus groups, volunteer in the
community, become involved in other networking
    groups like Jaycees, GLIMA, etc.
  • If your friends, parents, relatives are working,
they must submit a copy of your resume to their
    HR Department.
  • Chamber of Commerce Directories
  • OU Alumni/Mentoring

5
Existing Database
  • Use a Word resume format and keep it simple
  • Remember to update your information with
employers if you move or change phone numbers.
You can do this by merely resending your resume.
  • Ensure all skills are listed so searchers can
    find your resume.

6
External Recruiters
  • Companies continue to use external recruiters.
  • Develop a relationship with several recruiters
and plan to keep in touch throughout your career.

7
Resume Database Surfing
  • Targeting Zip Codes/Local Candidates
  • Use Address of Final Destination
  • Phone Area Code is Not a Concern
  • Posting Confidentiality
  • HR Frustration
  • Eliminate Unwanted Calls
  • Remove Personal Information on Resume if
    Uploading from Word

8
Database Surfing, Cont
  • Title of Resume
  • It should reflect what you want to do, not your
experience unless the two are related.
  • Creativity is good but unnecessary.
  • Use it to set yourself apart, most impressive are
work ethic descriptions (Hard Work Builds
    Character), talent descriptions (i.e.
Construction Manager with Experience Abroad), etc.

9
Resume Surfing, Cont.
  • Post in several sections (i.e. sales, customer
    service) to increase visibility.
  • Have a target market job in mind for each
section. Do not demonstrate that you are
    uncertain in your career goals.

10
Commitment
  • This is a sales process and is driven on volume.
  • Commit time weekly to your job search. Submit no
less than 10 resumes per week to various
    companies.
  • Do not limit yourself to advertised positions.
