Headlines in the news
  • Schools are stuck in the 20th century. Students
have rushed into the 21st. How can schools catch
up and provide students with a relevant
    education?

Who said that.
  • I am not complacent at all John. I have gone
through experiences such as this for a very long
time. I know I am right. I make the good
argument, write the wise articles, and the
persuasive letters. And sometimes I feel as
though I am preaching to a stack of wood. People
do not easily embrace change. Convincing them to
turn in a new direction requires a patience and
persistence that tax everyone. It does not help
matters that the course we are attempting to
follow could get us all hanged
  • Ben Franklin talking to John Adams , June 7, 1776

16
  • Educators need to be genuine, authentic leaders
that will infuse meaning in what we do as
teachers. We all need to tell our success
stories, assist others in helping, influence and
    inspire people around us.

4. Create a Learning Community
55
"What is a learning community?" Works together
to share and build an enriching environment. A
safe place to try, fail, and try again. A
learning community takes risks together. An
environment that fosters innovation and
creativity. A way to discuss "Big Ideas." An
atmosphere of respect where people are
comfortable sharing their ideas. A place where
we can learn from our own and each others
mistakes and feel comfortable doing so. A place
where everyone is interested in learning. A
place to share. Exchanging ideas.
Collaboration cross-curricular/division
56
Best Learning Community To Join as a Beginner?
57
  • Classroom 2.0 is a free, community-supported
network. We especially hope that those who are
"beginners" will find this a supportive community
and a comfortable place to start being part of
the digital dialog. If you feel that you are a
beginner and want some extra help, please click
here to join the Beginner Group as soon as you've
    registered.

Students prefer dealing with questions rather
than answers, sharing their opinions,
participating in group projects, working with
real-world issues and people, and having teachers
who talk to them as equals rather than as
inferiors.

The Beluga Whale
81
  • Howie,
  • My 6th grade tech class did a web evaluation
sheet on the "Facts About Beluga Whales" site you
shared with us. They still thought it was great.
They Googled the prof that wrote it and were
still convinced it was trustworthy. Finally, we
did the attached website comparison chart with
two other websites, and they finally figured out
that it was bogus. I really believe that cross
checking sites is the key, especially for kids.
Thanks for the good information we got in the
    class.
  • Denise Y. Everhart

82
While other species of true whales are
endangered, the Beluga population is thriving.
This is due, in part, to the extremely bitter
taste of Beluga meat which discourages hunting of
the animals.Dr. Anatole Blickson, Chairperson,
Department of Marine Zoology, University of
Finland.

In the midst of cleaning up our classroom, we
took some time on the last day of school to think
about what we had learned in grade one. Each
child chose themselves what they wanted to share
on the movie. It was interesting to me to see
what each child chose to talk about. As you can
see by the variety of answers, we have learned a
lot this year!

  • I was recently contacted by Travis MacLeod, who
teaches in Seosan City, South Korea, to see if we
could do a partnership between our classrooms.
Since they are in school while we are in bed
sleeping, we couldn't use Skype. We decided to do
an exchange of videos instead. Each class made a
list of questions they had for the other class to
answer. Below are the video we made for the kids
in Korea, and the one they made for us.

    Development

125
Proof of Concept
  • Consider a tool you want to explore
  • Select a partner to create a "mock up" of
something you might use in your role as an
    educatoror that students might create
    themselves.
  • Consider collaborating with others who teach
different grades or different subjects Remember
you need to have a product in 30 minutes, so
don't let little details bog you down.

126
  • Create a proof-of-concept that meets the
    following criteria
  • Utilizes at least one Web 2.0 tool
  • Is tailored for a specific educational purpose
  • Illustrates how you or students would use the
    tool
  • Demonstrates the concept sufficiently that other
    educators might implement it

127

  • Zach started his own nonprofit organization four
years ago after a hurricane hit Florida. He asked
his mother if they could donate their water
bottles, and he gathered more from neighbors, an
earnest little redheaded boy pulling his red
wagon behind him. By the end, they had 27
    truckloads of aid.

130
  • Zach has met three presidents and was invited to
President George W. Bush's farewell address this
winter. Last night, he was scheduled to visit
Elton John at his concert at Nationals Park and
accept a 25,000 check. And an Emmy-award winning
journalist, Michael Guillen, is making a 5

And finally
  • Are YOU capable of bringing about this change?

135
If you are that ONE..
  • from the book The Backdoor to Enlightenment
  • Eight Steps to Living Your Dreams and Changing
    Your World

136
Will you be the 10th person?
  • For every nine people who denounce innovation,
    only one will encourage it.
  • For every nine people who do things the way they
have always been done, only one will ever wonder
if there is a better way.
  • For every nine people who stand in line in front
of a locked building, only one will ever come
around and check the back door.
  • Our progress as a species rests squarely on the
shoulders of that tenth person. The nine are
satisfied with things they are told are valuable.
  • Person 10 determines for himself what has value.
